Sardinia

Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, is also one of Italy's autonomous regions. Mainly a mountainous region, Sardinia is divided into 8 provinces: Cagliari, Carbonia-Iglesias, Nuoro, Olbia-Tempio, Oristano, Medio Campidano, Sassari and Ogliastra. Sardinia is home for some UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the nuraghe, ancient megalithic edifices, or Su Nuraxi, a nuragic archaeological site in Barumini. Many Natural parks and reserves characterize this region as well and many tourists don't miss out on the wildlife reserves, oases and natural Italian monuments, all preserved by UNESCO.

Cagliari

The Province of Cagliari is a province situated on the island of Sardinia, autonomous region of Italy. Its capital is the city of Cagliari and the province is formed out of 71 comuni. The city of Cagliari is also the capital of the entire region of Sardinia. The province is home for the valley of Piscinamanna, very important area that hosts the main site of Technology Park, where many important research projects take place. Cagliari is also the place where one of Europe's most important ecosystems is, the Molentargius-Saline Regional Natural Park being home for more than a quarter of all European bird species.

Carbonia-Iglesias

The province of Carbonia - Iglesias is situated in the Sardinia region, in Italy. It includes the historical region of Sulcis-Iglesiente, and it is formed out of only 23 comuni. The province has 2 capitals, the cities of Carbonia and Iglesias and it includes 2 islands: the Island of San Pietro and the Island of Sant'Antioco. Carbonia - Iglesias is home for a very important Italian nature park, the Sulcis Natural Park, protected because it is one of the few nature areas left untouched in Italy. Iglesias is one of Sardinia's most beautiful cities, but the whole province is rich in monuments and ancient buildings, being visited by many tourists every year.

Nuoro

The Province of Nuoro is a province in the island region of Sardinia, Italy. The province is divided into 52 comuni and was established in the 1920's. The province of Nuoro is home for some of the wildest and most beautiful natural landscapes in the world, making it a top choice for tourists visiting Italy. It is also one of Europe's less-densely populated areas, with an impressive number of centenarians and supercentenarians having lived here. Antonio Todde, famous for being the oldest man in the world until 2002, lived to be 112. All this makes Nuoro a famous and special place to visit.

Olbia-Tempio

Olbia-Tempio is a province in the autonomous region of Sardinia, Italy. the province is home for the historical region of Gallura - which, in the middle ages, was one of the four "Giudicati" - and the island of La Maddalena, and it is formed out of 26 comuni. Traces of pre-Nuragic, Nuragic, Punic, Roman and Medieval civilizations were found here, making the territpry an important par of Italy's history. Many important monuments are found here as well, the Sacred Well of Sa Testa being among the most interesting ones.

Oristano

The province of Oristano is situated in the region of Sardinia, Italy. It is formed out of 88 total comuni and its capital is the city of Oristano. The territory is characterized by plains, mountains and, of course, many miles of coastline. Many protected areas are situated here, the Monte Arci Regional Park, the Sinis Peninsula – Mal di Ventre Island Marine Protected Area, and the S’Archittu - a 49-ft-high natural carved arch - are the most important ones. One of Europe's best-preserved wetlands is here, the Stagno di Cabras, but Stagno di Mistras is famous as well, for the gulls and flamingos living in the area.

Medio Campidano

The province of Medio Campidano is part of the Sardinia region, in Italy. It is formed out of 28 comuni and it was officially created in 2005. The capital cities, two of them, are Sanluri and Villacidro. the territory is characterized by many forms of relief: sea, mountains, plains and hills, and it is also called the ‘Green Province’, because it is situated in the most pristine areas of the region. One of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites is found here, Su Nuraxi (or, The Nuraghi) being an extremely valuable and important archaeological site.

Sassari

The Province of Sassari is a province in the island region of Sardinia, in Italy. It is formed out of 66 comuni and its capital is the city of Sassari. Some of the most beautiful touristic resorts of Italy are located here: Castelsardo, Alghero and Stintino, famous all over the world. Only one natural lake is found in Sassari, Lake Baratz, offering magnificent landscapes you will not soon forget. The numerous sandy beaches are populated with many tourists every year and, among Sassari's main monuments, there's the Fontana del Rosello, the Cathedral of St. Nicholas and the Tower of St. Anthony.

Ogliastra

The province of Ogliastra is situated in the region of Sardinia, in Italy. It is the most mountainous province on the island. With only 58,000 inhabitants and only 23 total comuni forming it, Ogliastra is the least populated province of Italy. Despite the small size, the province has two capitals, the cities of Lanusei and Tortolì. There are two beautiful lakes in this province, Lower Lake Flumendosa and Upper Lake Flumendosa, but what is very characteristic to this area are the wild olive trees, hence the province's name, Ogliastra.
