I have a Sicilian friend and yes, they see themselves as Sicilian first and then Italian even though she was born in the UK. Most see themselves separate from the rest of Italy, and even the surrounding islands they are quite protective over.

I think if they could survive economically without the aid of the rest of Italy they would fight for independence, but sadly, work and industries have always been difficult there, hence why many left and ventured to the USA and the UK.
