Low-cost Things To Do In Italy

Piazza San Marco – This is the center of activity in Venice, and is usually full of tourists. Napoleon called this “the drawing room of Europe.” I loved watching the pigeons. And there are tons of pigeons in St. Mark’s Square. If you are more of a people watcher, then grab a drink somewhere and have a seat.

The pigeons are great yes! So many people take pictures with them! XD

I would recommend for anyone going to Venice to just, wander around the tiny little streets and get lost. We did this with friends, having to walk in line to fit in the streets, having no idea where we were and finding ateliers for typical Venetian masks, and at the corner of a street having the amazing smell of a homemade bolognese sauce... Incomparable!

I know whoever wants to go to Venice would like to ride a gondola, but that can be quite expensive (80 euros for a thirty minutes ride I think, when we were there). What is also possible is to get a day ticket for the public transport that allows you to ride on the boat-bus, you can sit inside or outside, close to the water. We used this to ride around under the bridges and to visit the island of Murano.

Oh, last point about cheaping it out in Venice: an outside table will cost you more on your restaurant bill, regardless of what you eat. And some waiters/waitresses will pretend to not understand what you order to bring you the bigger portion/pricier option. A quarter of wine becoming a half, for example. Don't be scared to send back! You will also pay more money if you want to sit down at a table with your coffee as if you drink it standing (1 euro extra).

I studied in Rome for a few months and I was following a few different blogs about stuff free to do in Rome: http://freeofchargeinrome.blogspot.de/
It had many times some interesting local events for free, or for under 5 bucks. There are also more touristy pages that, if you just google it, will tell you the 10 or 15 or X most fun free or cheap thing to do in the city of your choice.

Couchsurfing or youth hostel in the non-tourist seasons are also a very effective way of reducing the costs. So is not eating in the expensive food joints next to the monument, and filling a water bottle up whenever you can instead of paying 4 euros for a bottle of water in a restaurant!

Thanks for sharing this link Joie, the fact that you studied there gives it another value, so I am going to take a look on it. I think that finding free stuff is just a matter of looking in the right place. Couchsurfing is another great option.

Well, I'm a pretty uneventful person. I enjoyed going to markets as much as others enjoy going to big parties...! The Colosseo is overpriced. And the bus can be usually taken without a ticket, never saw a controller and never heard of one. But people like to be safe rather than sorry!

Also, the Vatican museum is for free on Sundays, entrance up to 1PM. But the line is very long and the inside is crowded. So I suggest if anyone goes there, that they bring snacks, some music and/or other entertainment!

If you are a European Citizen you get free entrance to the Colosseum. If you're not it's only like, 5€ I think. Also, just walking down the streets is completely free. Rome has lots of beautiful houses and parks.

Totally agree. I HATE walking around but Rome is a city that's made for people who want to wander around and just soak up the surroundings. Very unique place.

Rome as you say has to be a unique place to visit and my wife for example would love that, but I do prefer to relax by the beach so the south or closer to the sea would be better for me. I love to swim and to smell the ocean!

Yeah, I'm definitely on a budget right now as well. These are some great ideas to help save money. You don't have to go to fancy places to have a good time. Some of the best and nicest places are more quaint and quiet.

Everyone is on a budget these days that is why it's so important to know what we are going to do so that we avoid being out of money while travelling. That doesn't happen to me as I am not travelling if I can't afford it.
