Lake Como, called Lago di Como in Italian, but also Lake Lario, after its Latin name, is Italy's third largest lake, after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. Being more than 1300 feet deep (more than 400 meters), Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe.

Since Roman times, Lake Como has been a place of retreat for wealthy people and has become, over the years, a popular place for tourists. The Lake has many palaces and villas and many famous people have (or have had in the past) homes along the Lake: Madonna, George Clooney, Gianni Versace and others. They don't call it one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe for nothing!

The weather in the area here is quite warm all year long. It rarely snows and the sun is up most of the time so you can enjoy your stay at the lake in any season.

Tourists usually come here to enjoy the magnificent landscapes, the interesting wildlife and relaxing spas. The main attraction is considered to be the town of Bellagio, where the lake divides itself into three branches. The scenery is so beautiful, there are no words to describe it so if you're looking to enjoy a beautiful view, make sure to put 'visit Bellagio' on your to do list.

Other attractions include the lake's gardens, villas and churches. Villa d'Este is the most famous villa of the lake. It is now a luxurious hotel, home for 161 unique rooms. Villa Carlotta is interesting to see if you love gardens. You can take a tour inside the villa and enjoy a few peaceful hours in the middle of nature, admiring rare species of flowers and other plants from around the world. Villa del Balbianello was used to shoot some scenes from one of the Star Wars movie, so if you're a fan make sure to visit it.

As far as religious sites go, there is one sanctuary in particular that is quite famous: The Sacro Monte di Ossuccio (in translation, "Holy Mount of Ossuccio"). The sanctuary is located on the western edge of Lake Como. It is one of the 9 "sacri monti" of the Lombardy and Piedmont regions. It is also part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Other visited religious places are the 15 chapels dedicated to the Mysteries of the Rosary (the string of prayer beads used to count prayers).

If you're into outdoor activities, you should try biking and mountain biking, paragliding, windsurfing and at least one boat trip. If you're here during winter, make sure to go skiing in the mountains nearby. You can also go camping if you enjoy it, numerous campsites along the lake are available for tourists who like to get in touch with nature.

All in all, the lake is extremely beautiful. If you love travelling, make sure to add Lake Como as one of your next destinations. Camping, cruising, enjoying a nice relaxing afternoon in one of the spas are only a few of the activities you could experience here, at Lake Como.
