Trento, a lovely Italian city located in the Adige River valley, is the capital of Trentino and is famous for the high quality of life, good job opportunities and for being one of Italy's most prosperous cities. Well, it's one of Italy's most expensive cities as well.
Trento lies just South of the Alps, in a wide valley called the Adige Valley. The valley itself it surrounded by mountains that make the scenery simply breathtaking.
Although Trento is not one of the main tourist filled Italian cities, it still is visited for its monuments and beautiful architecture. The small city centre and many buildings were actually restored to as they looked like originally, making the Renaissance and German influences visible and also, giving the city a special charm.
You can admire parts of the original medieval walls in Piazza Fiera, walls that have once encircled the whole city to protect it from enemy invasions.
Trento also has some great monuments you can visit. The main one is the city's Cathedral of St. Vigilius. The Cathedral, build in the 13th century is amazingly beautiful! Right beside the Duomo you can admire another Fountain of Neptune, built 2 centuries after the one in Florence though.
The Buonconsiglio Castle is an interesting place to visit as well. It houses a museum and a collection of noteworthy frescoes from previous centuries. There's also a legend that says that the castle was secretly connected to Trento's Cathedral by an underground tunnel, so that prince-bishops could travel between them unseen.
Besides the many churches the city has, the surroundings are interesting places to spend your time as well.
The Palazzo delle Albere (in translation, Trees' Palace) is a beautiful palace built right next to the Adige river. Former villa where prince-bishops used to live in, it now houses a museum of modern art.
There are a lot of other fun things you can do near Trento too. You can, for example, take a trip to the nearby mountains and visit the Alpine Botanical Garden. It was founded in the 1930's, making it one of the oldest botanical gardens in the mountains.
If you're already outside the city, you could pay a visit to Doss Trento, a small hill near Trento. There are some historical monuments you can see here as well, such as the remains of an early 'basilica' (a very old church), a mausoleum dedicated to Cesare Bettisti or the gallery built inside the mountains inside which there's a chapel dedicated to St. Barbara. There's also a huge historical inscription on one of the mountain walls, it says "per gli Alpini non esiste l'impossibile" and it means "the impossible does not exist for the Alpines". The words were meant to be Mussolini's new motto for the Alpines.
The Segozano Pyramids are also an interesting work or nature. They do attract a lot of tourists as it is said that they were formed about 50,000 years ago. Interesting, right?
