I have travelled around Italy on the train and I loved it and would do it again. My longest single journey was from Rome to Nice to watch the Grand Prix in Monte Carlo overnight and the journey was amazing.
I would recommend people to use the trains, but you do have to get to know the difference between the train types, express, local and Intercity and the different prices. Also they do discounts last time I was there and always remember to validate your ticket before you board. If in doubt ask.
