The Godfather Trilogy

I have to agree with many of you, I think most of the gangster and mafia based movies tend to romanticize Mafia and give glamour to it. They are really far from what mafia really is (was), they basically are fiction and they make you care for ruthless characters.
That said, I like the Godfather trilogy, I've read the book and watched the movies several times and I think it's one of the best fiction about mafia, the actors are great and the story is entertaining and well directed. I think Mario Puzo nailed at least one aspect about old style mafia, the importance of the "family".

What is there to say about this trilogy that we already don't know. From the cast to impeccable story. Everything just right and I am not a big fan of this kind of violence in movies but have to admit Godfather is one of the best American movies I have seen. I think that everybody in the movies had great performances. Just the names are enough. Brando, De Niro, Pacino, Duval, Caan, Coppola and the music.

I think most films will romanticise about the subject they're on, gangster movies and especially ones about the mafia are just the same.

The gangster life is glamorous in most movies, but I think in the Godfather, they tried to show the darker side of it aswell, and that's the side you don't often see.

Is it bad that I have never seen it? There have been countless people say it was one of the best films of all time, yet I never seem to see the appeal behind it. Mobsters and the life they are living is not that interesting for me. Maybe because I'm more into fantasy stories?

I think with a film like the Godfather trilogy, it's one of them stories that even if you're not into that genre of movie you'll still enjoy it.

A bit like even though not everyone is a lover of prison movies, Shawshank Redemption is classed as the greatest movie of all time as people can get a lot out of it on many different levels.

It wаs thе first mаfiа mоviе writtеn, dirесtеd аnd асtеd by Itаliаns. Frаnсis соppоlа’s hungry brilliаnсе аs its dirесtоr, wаs сinеmаtiсаlly оpеrаtiс… а quаlity оnly еquаlеd by its соmpаniоn – Gоdfаthеr II. Bоth mоviеs brоught with thеm а thеmе оf fаmily, Itаliаn stylе.

It is the the Best film for me!
Thе gаngstеr film is оnе оf thе mоst еnduring оf Hоllywооd gеnrеs. In Аmеriса thе mоviеs hаvе mythоlоgizеd thrее typеs оf hеrоеs: thе соwbоy, thе соp, аnd thе gаngstеr. Guys with guns in а wоrld withоut wоmеn. Mоst durаblе is thе gаngstеr, fоr withоut him, thе соp hаs nо аdvеrsаry.

I actually saw a little bit of one the other day on TV, and it just confirmed my position of these movies just not really being for me. I get that feeling that even when they are moving fast and there is a lot of action, even then it is pretty slow.

I haven't seen this movie yet but most of the people who have watched the movie and understand it have said one thing in common, this movie is marvelous and a masterpiece! Me and my hubby loves to watch mob movies like Donnie Brasco, Casino, Goodfellas and the like but we haven't seen The Godfather yet but we're planning to watch it as we know that we will definitely like it :)

If you like mob movies (like I do as well) then you'll definitely enjoy this series of films. For me The Godfather is probably THE movie that paved the way for all the rest, and while they are starting to look a little dated now, the storyline and acting are timeless. There aren't many movies that are as good today as when they first came out, but with The Godfather trilogy and especially the first one, it's a movie that you'll never get tired of watching.

Yeah, no doubt that the Godfather was the movie that started it all, back in the 80's if I am not mistaken? Taking a look. :) OK, so the first one was in 1972, the second in 1974 and the third one in 1990. 9.2 rating on IMDB says it pretty much all, everyone loves it!

The second movie in the series is the worst one in my opinion, but of course you can't just watch 1 and 3! As individual movies they are still good to watch though, but watching them as the trilogy is the way to do it, at least once. The only bad thing I can think of is that they can be quite long and detailed, so they aren't movies that you can just put on to have on in the background, and you do have to set a bit of time to one side to watch them.

Yeah, I agree. When we have a trilogy or a sequence of movies (totally unrelated, but Star Wars is always in my mind when thinking about movie sequels), we need to see them in order to understand the story. I recall being a kid and watching Godfather with my family, so it's something that it's a part of my childhood, I though Italy was just this! :D

I think things like this brings up an interesting point (as do you @to7update) and I think that many people will see a film such as The Godfather and immediately think that's what Italy and Italians are all like. I know I was a teenager when I first watched the film and I automatically thought that every Italian was related to the mafia and I imagined Italy itself as having no large towns or cities but was just all countryside and little farms and villages.

That isn't the case of course, but do Italians worry about what the rest of the world thinks of them, and do they get sick of being pigeonholed into 'oh well if you're Italian then you must know a few gangsters', which is what a lot of people still think.

Really? Well I won't be surprised since a lot of people who have watched The Godfather trilogy said that it's an all time classic. I've never heard even one who complained or say that it's boring or it's not good. I'm not really a fan of mob films but since my hubby loves this kind of movies, and I've seen a lot that are actually good, now I'm also a fan of them. I guess I'm missing one since I haven't seen The Godfather yet, but I'll definitely will :)

Yeah, lol, now I look back and I see that it's not like that at all, Italy is much more than that, but at that time a lot of movies and series were about the mob (I recall Pulpo if I am not mistaken), so for a kid it's hard to make a difference. Even today whenever I think Italy I recall those shows.

In a way I guess we can say that about anything though, and when e are growing up e are a lot more susceptible to thinking things are like we see them in the movies. Watch a movie based in New York or in London and we would think that everyone rides around in yellow cabs or on red London buses and that isn't the case at all.

Just because a person is Italian or has Italian ancestry doesn't mean they have links to the Mafia, although movies like the Godfather have given it a certain glamour that I think a lot of Italians do actually like, even though it isn't really true.
