Wine can also vary quite a lot in terms of alcohol content - some are below 6% alcohol which is around the strength of beer, while others may be over 13%, which is stronger, but it a glass won't get you cranked. Something else to consider is the alcohol can enhance the flavor of the food you're eating, especially when it's cooked with it, since it it brings more of the scents and the aromas of it to your nose - which is responsible for a great deal of how we taste things overall.
You do have to be careful going out to lunch and having a glass or two of wine - because even one glass can technically put you over the legal limit. Should you get pulled over, and by chance the officer perhaps smells it on your breath and really wants to be a jerk, they could make you do a breathalyzer test and bust you. It doesn't take much alcohol at all to reach a .05%. Just make sure someone in your group who is not drinking drives you to and from there.
My grandparents who were Italian drank wine, usually a Lambrusco or something similar. But they also drank a lot of beer, whiskey, and surprisingly they were quite fond of ginger ale. They usually drank beer during the day though and broke out the wine and whiskey for dinner.
