Horse Meat - Cavallo

I heard about the #horsemeat scandals in UK and Ireland. I believe the main issues was that it was contaminated with some bad stuff and was in products labelled as beef.

This is very wrong and the consumer should know what meat they are buying.

They say, that good quality horsemeat does no harm to humans. I guess it's more of a principle issue as many on here would not even think about eating it.

Well the horse meat that was in those products were of race horses I think, so the meat was contaminated in a way that the horse was injected with things when it was still alive. If it was normal horse meat though, like the ones just being raised in farms it probably wouldn't be that of an issue.

Really?! I had no idea it was race horse meat...here was me preaching about how although it was misleading to the consumer, it wouldn't do any harm and people were creating too much drama over it.

I'm not really sure but that's what I've heard from most people who were, uh, "concerned" about it . Apparently there was also pig DNA in it and things..

Ive never tried horse meat either and don't know if I could. I don't doubt it tastes good. A lot of nationalities eat horse. I have a friend whose Cuban and she told me her parents would eat it all the time in Cuba. One animal offered so much more meat it could feed a family for days.

I have never eaten horse meat and not planning to do that. Maybe it's because we don't eat horse meat in my country. I read an article which said horse meat was being mixed with other beef products in Europe against the wish of many people. Horses are friendly animals and that should make up not eat horse meat.

I don't think I could ever eat horse meat. I guess it is about what you traditionally eat. I am used to horses being pets or racehorses and never eaten. This would be too much for me! I will stick to beef, chicken, fish etc. The more common meats. I don't think I will venture out of this.

I respect Italians for openly admitting that horse is considered one of their many delicacies. I wouldn't mind ordering it off of a menu if I am ever in a restaurant that serves it as an authentic Italian recipe. intentionally ordering horse meat totally beats eating food from an American fast food place that as advertised as 100% beef when it is in fact horse meat. I'm sure that any American that claims to be too picky to try any foreign delicacy, yet eats at McDonald's or any other fast food place has eaten a number of unlikely things. Some of which might not be animal.

In my home country I would never ever thought of eating horse meat. Since moving to Italy, I tried it and have to say that it is actually quite nice.

I do admit that I feel bad in a way because the horse is considered a friend to humans as it has far more positive uses than being used for it's meat. However, it is a fact that in Italy, it is quite popular.

Have you tried it? Do you like it?
You ate horse meat? You really had the guts. I would never taste anything which i know is not edible according to people in my country.

I had horse meat, it's very common is some italian cities. I must say I loved it, it tastes really good and it can be used for several recipes. One of the most delicious things I've eaten in my life was horsemeat "polpette", they are like meatballs but bigger and served with a delicious vinegar based sauce. In my city horsemeat is not that common, it's very rare (almost impossible I'd say) to find it on a restaurant menu so if I want to have it, I need to go elsewhere. But every time I eat it, I feel very guilty, thinking about the horse killed to fill up my plate so I haven't had it for a very long time.

I have been on a meatless diet for three years now and before that I haven't tried horse meat. I might have tried horse sausages and as I recall they were very good but just meat I haven't tried. I didn't know that it was popular in Italy and pigs are quite friendly the same as cows or goats. One of the reasons I went to be vegetarian, apart from health issues, is that we do not eat reasonably but quite opposite. We kill young animals because the meat is more tasty.
