Girls Playing Rugby?

I think that it is great that women are playing rugby. Why not? There are some women who like more rough sports that are viewed as traditionally just for men (or more manly) and those women should play whatever sport they like without having to worry about what they look like.

Probably, it's not exactly the safest sport for girls or boys alike, but then there are people who simply love rugby and nothing will stop them from playing it, and from getting injured once in a while. There are plenty of girls around who will do certain dangerous high risk activities that I would never even want to watch. So, it takes all kinds. :)

I think if it becomes more mainstream of females participating in contact sports then the games will be more professionally run. This will mean games will be safer and higher quality. It is great that more girls are interested in these and I hope it translate to better exposure for women's rugby.

Unless it's touch rugby or children up to a certain age (which does happen), I don't think that mixed rugby makes sense. I've played a lot of rugby and it's just not the type of sport you can mix, both in terms of the physicality but also because of the risk of "wandering hands" when guys go into the tackle.
I was just thinking about the physical differences and injuries, I had not give wandering hands a thought when it comes to a game of Rugby between the two sexes. I think when people are playing a game together there should be some sportsmanship and respect given by all players to all players.

I think in an ideal world there should be respect and sportsmanship but a rush of blood to the head can lead to people doing things they really shouldn't. It may not be as clear cut, but in a sport which is about close contact and effectively wrestling at times, it would definitely be a consideration.

We have Women's Boxing, Wrestling, Martial Arts...

I can't really see how women's rugby is any more dangerous than those sports.

Haha, I agree with you here. If women can box, and wrestle and practice martial arts, why can't they play rugby? It's a very controversial issue, though, it must be admitted. But still, time will come for everything, even this - you'll see. When you think that women in 20th century had to fight for their right to run a marathon... or vote...

Well here in New Zealand we already have Girls Rugby and Women's Rugby. I see that Italy as a National womens team so I imagine they must draw their players from somewhere. I don't understand why people feel like they shouldn't be playing sports. I guess thats just the world I grew up in though, not much is limited by gender here in NZ anymore.

The more professionalism that comes into the female game (covering skills training, conditioning, intensity training and so on), the more it can filter down to the grassroots level of the game. Once it gets down to that level, the whole sport will explode. Attitudes are changing so there's nothing to stop the sport from evolving.

That's true. As more interest grows in women's rugby more funding will be available to host local competitions not only for boys but for girls as well. Really though in order for that to happen the top level needs to be competitive. I dont know how competitive the Italian Women's Rugby team is but to increase it you need more talent. Talent comes from the grassroots your talking about. Its kind of a catch-22.

From what I can gather, the Italian Women's Rugby team didn't qualify for the recent Women's World Cup. So on a relative basis, it looks like it's less competitive than the male team within the sport. But as ever, money can change that.

I think that rugby is a great sport, it's interesting to watch and I'm sure playing it is a lot of fun as well. However, I was stunned to see that there are a lot of girls who play rugby in my town and I have to say, I find it odd. Rugby is not really a girly sport but these girls don't seem to mind if they get hurt every once in a while.

What do you think? Is it really safe for girls to play rugby?

I don't really see anything wrong in girls playing rugby i mean if they have the passion for it then their is certainly nothing stopping them from engaging in the sport.

Well there are things stopping them and thats part of the problem. Most rugby teams are male only and it is difficult to find a team to play on as a female. I think what we are all getting at is that there needs to be more opportunity (teams) that allow the girls to play. I'm not necessarily talking about coed teams, though that is an option as not every guy is built like a boxer. I think we need more organized female only teams.
