Recently I've tried a fried ricotta calzone for the first time...and it was really different from "normal" Pizza, have you ever tried one ?

Mmm, it's 9 o'clock in the morning and my mouth is watering :D

I've tried it once or twice and I loved it!
It's kind of like pizza, it's folded pizza :)

Usually, it's stuffed with sauce, tomato and mozzarella but any stuffing works. Just like real pizza!

I think the dough is similar to pizza dough too, depending on the region, and the Americans make it with real pizza dough.

I haven't eaten one in a while though, I think last time I had one was at a sports event where I had calzone for lunch. It was so good I asked for seconds!

I like calzone, it seems to last longer than pizza. :p However, I have noticed there seem to be two different types of calzone - there's the type which is simply a pizza folded over, so has tomato sauce on the inside, which I find is more common. However, I went to a very authentic Italian restaurant last year where I ordered calzone and the inside was just cheese and my topping, then the tomato sauce was poured on top. I'm not a big cheese fan, so I prefer the former, but I don't know which way is the real Italian way!

I have never tried calzone before but I would really love to. Anything that tastes even remotely like pizza I'm interested in trying at least once. :)

Calzones are amazing but I can't make them at home since I don't have a deep fryer. Every once in a while I make panzerottis at home, they aren't as good as calzones but they are an acceptable alternative.

Wow, all that detail made my mouth water, and I just ate! Now I'm hungry again :(

I haven't tried this but I hope to try it soon. It seems really amazing. Now, if I can only find a place here where they make it..

I've tried calzones before but never fried. Sounds delicious though! I shouldn't look at food posts when I am hungry! LOL

Ok, dumb question - are all calzones fried? The only ones I've seen (in US) are baked like pizza.......

Calzones are amazing. I love cheese so any food that is loaded with cheese is a favorite of mine. I also like that you can customize them with toppings of your choice. I wouldn't say I prefer them to Pizza, but it would be close.

Nope, usually they are baked in a oven like pizza.
Fried it's a rarity in Italy (I just know 1 place that does it in my town).

Oh, ok. Thanks for the clarification luca! I just thought maybe I was missing something. :) Sometimes I prefer calzones to pizza. It feels more satisfying to have that extra layer of crust and ingredients stuffed in!

I used to make a calzone for my kids with crescent roll dough! I would just put pepperoni and cheese in them and bake and my kids would just gobble them up! I think I should try bigger ones now though since my kids are teens.

What do people usually put in a calzone? I have only had one from a fast food pizza place and it wasn't that great. Since I like any kind of pizza, I figured a calzone would be the same, but this one wasn't. I have always been wanting to try a different one from a better restaurant, but the conversations on here make me want to try to make one!

I always like to try different things and love pizza so is a calzone just as simple as getting pizza dough, putting some pepperoni and cheese on top and folding it over? I always say that anything fried is good, but does anyone have opinions on fried vs. baked as far as the taste goes? I know baked would be healthier, but I don't want to sacrifice taste if I don't have to on my first attempt.

Something like that!
It's like a small pizza, folded and fried. Usually, the stuffing is made with tomato sauce and cheese, which is enough to make you love it :D but you can put whatever you want in it.

I'm sure that you didn't like it because the fast food people were doing it wrong :D
Try eating it somewhere else, I guarantee you that you'll love it once you have a taste of the good stuff.

I never tried to make one myself but it sounds like a good idea. I have made pizza at home before, so calzone shouldn't be much different.

Fried pizza? That sounds amazing! But is it fried pizza or a calzone? haha I'd love to try one, though.

Yeah it's pretty much like a deep fried pizza, which is possibly the the most amazing food idea. It's not the healthiest choice but they are absolutely delicious.

Sounds delightful! I think I will definitely have to try one again at a better restaurant so I can get a better taste of the good stuff. I mean, if you like pizza and fried food then what's better than fried pizza, right?!

I'm convinced that I need to give it another shot at a restaurant and then try to make one at home. I can already see my biggest problem being filling it up with too much meat and cheese where it won't even fold over. Maybe I should try baking it first so that if it falls apart, I will at least have a regular pizza!

Of course it's not healthy, but what IS these days? We eat processed foods, artificially grown vegetables, etc. So, a fried pizza every once in a while can't do that much harm :D

Heck, I ate worse things in my life, such as "Langos", when I visited Hungary (these are some images, in case you don't know what they are), which are almost like the calzone, but without the stuffing.
