East Or West Coast

We would like to travel either the east or west coast of Italy. Can anyone let me know which is better to enjoy the small coastal cities? I do not want to spend much time in the usual tourist places and would rather get a feel of villages and towns. I love old buildings and architecture that has a lot of character, especially things like castles or villas.

Well, if I had to choose a destination, I would love to see the Cinque Terre. That's on the West Coast.
Here's an article on this website, with more info and a few pictures. I know it's your usual tourist place, but if you don't do tourist things and just go and enjoy the view and the beach and everything, you will probably have a great time.

But this is just my opinion and I didn't really visit a lot of places in Italy.
Maybe someone else has other suggestions
