Days to be aware of...

When vacationing it can be inconvenient to find yourself stuck in a hotel room with nothing to do, all because a city or town is closed for a holiday.

Are there any Italian holidays, involving citywide closures, that tourists need to be aware of?

However, city wide closures im not sure about but many italians escape the big cities in August as its the month of national holidays. Take Milan for example, but things are usually open as there are always tourists.
