    Valcamonica has one of the largest collections of prehistoric petroglyphs in the world. With such a large collection, Valcamonica has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. The rock drawings in Valcamonica was Italy’s first recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    In fact, there are more than 140,000 symbols and figures carved into 2,400 different rocks dating over a period of 8000 years. The carvings are based on agriculture, navigation, war and magic.

    Valcamonica (Valle Camonica) is one of the largest valleys in the central Italian alps and is around 90km long. The valley starts at Tonale Pass and ends at Coma Trentapassi. The Valle Camonica is crossed by the river Oglio which is Italy 5th longest river.

    The Petroglyphs can be found on all surfaces of the valley, but are more evident in the areas of Darfo Boario Terme, Capo Di Ponte, Nadro, Cimbergo and Paspardo.
