Why Are The Necropolis So Fascinating?

Hello all :) Long time no see :D
I have a question, regarding Siracuse, but it is valid for other parts of Italy.. why are the necropolis so important? They are just.. graves. Sure, they look nice, look, this is a picture of the Pantalica:

But is it really worth it to go all the way to see a mountain?
 
I think they're interesting because they have so much history behind them. Also, this is not something you see everyday, such beautiful sights you can only see in certain parts of the world, but, yeah, if you don't find them interesting then don't visit them :)
Or, you can go see them just to convince yourself, and if you don't like the sight, then just enjoy the nature and fresh air! :)
