Berlusconi was a central figure in Italy and in Europe for long long years. He was in the government, owner of Milan and a lot of media, but now I haven't heard of him anymore. Is he still active or he retired from the public life?

That is a point I have been pondering myself. I remember him being in the news a lot in recent years. But since those days I have been living mostly overseas and am now out of touch with European politics. I am also interested to hear what happened with him.

After a bit of skimming, it appears that he's about to serve a prison sentence for all that he did. Good riddance, he was such a bane on the people of Italy. His public relations was also garbage. Really unfortunate that Italy had to have him as a leader. Well, you have your good and your bad.

Wow, finally he's going to prison? That is more than deserved! Our former prime-minister (José Socrates) is in jail as well, what a shame that former presidents and prime-ministers end up in jail, we are being rules by criminals.

No jail, he is serving a sentence of " lavori socialmente utili " meaning he must work in a clinic taking care of Alzheimer patients.

The service should expire in a few months and his party is still his own property, as none else has the money to pay expenses.

Thats funny cause his party, like any other italian parties, received public funding till last year, and it has been in existence for 20 years, but all that money somehow vanished into nothing

It's a shame that politics is in the state that it is and Berlusconi and others like him have created this situation. So helping patients with Alzheimer eh? It could be worse.

Berlusconi has always been an enigma. He's always managed to survive the scandals and the conspiracies in politics, media and football. Finally, the law has caught up with him. But I wouldn't be surprised if he came back again in some capacity.

So, he managed to get away lightly. I thought that it would be the case. A man of his magnitude and connections would not simply end up in jail. And if so, it would probably be in grand style of some sort.
Well, he'll be back sooner or later. Just, perhaps not as "outstanding" anymore as before.

Not really an enigma, the guy was a politician in the true sense of the word. When he was accused of illegalities he created a law to escape and made his actions legal. Can you believe this?

^ I can believe anything, actually, we live in a world where everyone looks after themselves, the fact that politicians and the law is the same for everyone is just a nice illusion.

I never really bothered to watch the news about Berlusconi. I only know that there were some scandals, he was supposed to go to jail but, surprise surprise... then there were some other scandals, and now he's planning on returning to the political life he once had. Which is odd, I thought he was banned from interfering with politics ever again....

Anyway, the latest news about Berlusconi is this: there were some protests in Milan recently and, long story short, Berlusconi spoke to the people and proposed a solution to get out of the economic crisis: invent a new currency.

Here's what he said:

We cannot go on with this euro, we must improve the European monetary policy and achieve equality of the dollar and euro interchange,” Berlusconi said, as quoted by TASS. “We must bring back our right to print money and establish monetary market exchange, it is quite possible.” (source)

Amazingly enough he will still return to politics? Seriously? I have a hard time believing in that! LOL, so he continues to deceive the people, like it's possible for Italy to leave the Euro, anyone still believes in him?...

I hadn't thought about Berlusconi in a long time, I guess out of sight, out of mind huh?
Interesting to learn that he is taking care of Alzheimer's patients, that is a very noble way to carry out his sentence, it seems like Italy has found a good way to "punish" him, they should make this more common knowledge.

Yep, at least he's being punished, but for all he has done I think he deserved some jail time. One thing is what he done, other thing is to prove that, so I guess that Italians are happy for the fact that he was found guilty of something.

What you should understand is Berlusconi's party is still part of italian government, they were never gone.
Minister of interiors, who gives orders to police forces, is Berlusconi's right hand Angelino Alfano and minister of infrastructures, the one who assigns contracts for public works, is Maurizio Lupi, member of a religios sect allied with Berlusconi from the start of his political career.

I'm honestly not surprised that he didn't go to jail but I was still hoping that he would. He got off way too light in my opinion. I can't believe he is going to be returning to politics though. I thought it was the end for his political career but I guess not.

The fact with politicians is that if one of them goes to jail, a whole bunch of them go behind because many play the same game, that is why Berlusconi will be back soon in my opinion.

This is why I do not believe in politics.
If any of you have seen the news on TV while you were in Italy, each time they show "a scene" from court, behind the judge's desk there is a saying, it says "la legge e uguale per tutti" (means, the law is the same for all). But my guess is, whoever put that there, didn't have enough space to continue the sentence, "... for all who are not rich or into politics" :D

I come from a country where politicians are so corrupt, it's actually strange and very suspicious if you find one who isn't! Yet, in the last couple of years, somehow some of them did end up in jail. But here, you break the law, you are repaid by given the chance to do it again :D
