Machiavelli is sometimes surrounded by criticism of why he wrote his books but we can't overlook the fact that he is one of the founders of modern political science in Italy. He also prophesied the Italian decline. He was influencial with his republican streak and he once led the army though he planned his military strategies from a political view.
Mасhiаvеlli played a greater role in politics after his death. The Prince is one of my favorite books, both from a historical perspective and a philosophical one. He guided and advised the de' Medici family as well as the Pope.
He is often misunderstood, and while people may think he is ruthless in his approach, at the time that is how states were won and survived. Politics was about alliances and also winning the trust of the people, and he witnessed first hand how some statesmen won and others failed. The Prince maybe a short book, but it is rich with advice and observations.
