Train, Airplane Or Car?

Trains are the best way, especially for smaller towns where flying would mean getting a taxi there anyhow. Now with more buses and coaches that are available, like Megabus, it's cost effective and takes the same amount of time as the train. Some places are only linked by buses, so that's the only option. I visited a place in Grosetto and there was one bus a day to the town I was going to and that was the only way to get there unless you rented a car.

I prefer train as it allows you to see more of the country as you travel through it. I think it is quicker and less hassle in comparison to planes. However, if you are comfortable driving around yourself, that is a good option as well.

If you are looking to get someplace quick and don't have a lot of time I would suggest an air plane. However, if you have time to kill driving is a great way to see some of the Italian country side. Especially if you don't take the main highways. The country isn't too big so it will only take you a few hours to get from one major city to another.

One should remember driving can be expensive and take up time if you use the toll roads. If you go to a city, parking is a huge problem because many hotels will not offer parking, and it's rarely free.

Taking the faster and more expensive train is usually as fast as flying, because most airports are outside the city and can take a while to get to. On the other hand most train stations are in the heart of the city. I rarely had to get a taxi if I was on a train unless I had a lot of luggage when I was traveling by train.

I have heard stories from backpackers that renting a car and just driving through the countryside is the best way to see the sights. Lots of hidden gems can be found in the road less traveled, and there are TONS you will not see by traveling by plane or train. I highly recommend backpacking through the different locales, and even couch surfing with the locals if you are brave enough. There are lots of sights to see and there are lots of cultural aspects to learn - and all you have to do is make the effort to reach out to them. Good luck!

This is actually one of the most important questions for me when I travel somewhere. I do not have drivers licence so that is out of the question if somebody else isn't driving but I like to feel independent while travelling. I also had a traumatic experience travelling by plane so I think I will think twice about that so train seems like the best option and love the whole concept of travelling with train. It is so cosy and stress free. Maybe it is not but I hope it is. Anyway, I like the adventure and would also like to go sometimes in one, alone or with somebody.

Here's an idea: BACKPACKING. No transportations, no tour guides, just you mingling with the locals for one memorable experience. You get to couchsurf through people's homes, get to taste real home made cooking, know stories of people you never even knew, and the best part is that it is incredibly cheap, since you will be avoiding as much expenditure as possible. Think about it, you might be surprised about the rewarding experiences of backpacking through town to town.

I have to say car, because living in Europe would mean that visiting Italy most likely would happen with a car. And to get to other places car would be a good idea too. But I would also like to try italian trains one day.
It should be fun - italian trip by train.
