This might be wierd but this IS the music thread.....

I used to belly dance, years ago.

Some of the music I danced with had a definite Italian/Greek flavor.

Is Belly Dance/Raks Sharqi popular in Italy?

I would say that belly type dancing is not a popular dance in Italy. There are places that provide lessons and occasionally you may come across this style of dance.

The most popular type of dance in southern Italy is the 'Tarantella'

The most popular in northern Italy is probably 'Latino' and 'Liceo'

Of course, you will find in most cities throughout italy that play mainstream club type music. (house, tecno, pop, r&b, hiphop etc....)

Hope this helps

on my visit to italy, i only saw young adults dancing to club music and the adults doing ballroom. i've never seen anyone belly dance live.

Diana, I think you will find it is the other way around - Southern Italian music is/can be influenced by Greek and Middle Eastern music - especially the drum/tambourine rythms from North Africa, mainly Morocco, Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia.

The "zagreit" shrill sound of North Africa is still used in places like Campania and some parts of Sicily.
