Surprising Facts About Italy?

Discussion in 'General Discussion About Italy' started by sammien94, Mar 17, 2015.

  1. So we all know that pizza and pasta originated from there, but did you know that banks were invented in Italy as well????

What are some other interesting tidbits about Italy do you know?
  2. Wow, I didn't know banks were invented in Italy! That's awesome. Apparently, the idea for ambulances came from Italy as well. I love learning and discovering more about this wonderful country!
  3. Most historians agree the Renaissance began in Italy, but many call it the Italian Renaissance as the Italian for Renaissance is Rinascimento.
Why people use the French term I'm not sure, it maybe easier to pronounce, but the roots were in Italy so theoretically they should use the Italian word for rebirth.
  4. I didn't know banks were invented in Italy also. I already knew about the pizza and pasta as most people do, but banks. Maybe that's where the Italian Job originated. What other things originally comes from Italy?
  5. This is such an interesting topic! I never knew banks were invented over here! I thought banks were an American invention :D

I can add to the list!

Did you know that casinos were invented in Italy as well? I don't think Italians invented gambling, but they did invent a place to make it legal! LOL

Condoms were invented in Italy as well. The first condoms were invented in the 16th century, by an Italian guy, I think he was a doctor or, in any case, he worked in that very field :)

And, speaking of french terms (@Gabe ) the "eau de cologne" was invented by Italians as well. I don't understand why they call it "eau de cologne", it's just the way it is I guess.
  6. Haha the condom thing is hilarious. Of COURSE it was the Italians who came up with it. The first condoms were made out of like sheep or pig skin or something similar, right?
  7. Did someone already say Jeans ?
  8. Italians are famous for pasta, but did you know that the Arabs brought dried pasta to Italy in the thirteenth century. Italians made fresh pasta before then and it was commonly eaten with honey and sugar. Tomato sauce was not added until the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The old-fashioned way of eating pasta was with the fingers, arm held high and head tilted back and pasta traditionally was made by the mother of the household, who passed the precious technique to her daughters.
  9. Wow, so originally it was a dessert? I can't imagine eating sweet pasta nowadays. The old fashioned way of eating pasta sounds fun and messy, haha. It's so weird that the Arabs got dried pasta first, I don't think there are many pasta dishes in Arab cuisine?
  10. I knew eating pasta with sugar is a thing! My family used to cook pasta with chopped, fried, nuts and sugar. It was so good I'm literally drooling right now :D

Oh, and by the way, the telephone was in fact not invented by Graham Bell. The original idea belonged to 2 Italian guys :) Bell simply bought the idea and developed it.

Oh, and Italians also invented the scooter. Well.... it would have been weird if they didn't, right? :D Italy is so famous for its people on scooters! And whenever someone thinks about a scooter, they think Vespa.

Also, since Italy is the country of the coffee, it's no surprise that the moka coffee pot was, in fact, invented right here. I have 2 moka pots at home, one small for only 1 cup and one for 3 cups. I use them every single day and the coffee is so easy to make, so good and so strong too! Thank you Mr. Bialetti!
  11. Wow! Italy seems to be very innovative as these inventions really opened my eyes. A lot of countries tend to copy the Italians a swell but they're not quite the same. Casinos and condoms really shocked me here as well. I think that Italy doesn't get as much credit as it should.
  12. Italy has one of the oldest cultures in the world, so it is no surprise that they invented much of what civilization commonly uses now. After all, the Romans are prided for a lot of innovations. One more really cultural fact here is that the piano hails from Italy. It was invented in the shop of a harpsichord maker named Bartolomeo di Francesco Cristofori in Padua, Italy in 1709.
  13. Jeans! I would not have believed that. I thought they originated in the United States with the farmers. I thought farmers needed something more durable. They came up with overalls. Eventually boys wore them and then girls. Ad time went on fashion changed their function. Please give more details about the jeans in Italy.

Blue Jeand comes from " Blu di Genova " Genoans invented it for ship sails, then started sewing low cost clothes.

Then towards the end of XIX century the cloth was adopted in US for industrial production.
  15. How interesting. Were the sails blue then? I always think of sails as white or off white. Sounds similar to my grandmother and her sisters who wore clothes made form potato sacks. Thanks for following up on my curiosity.
  16. Wow, so jeans were invented that early?? That sounds really interesting. Can you imagine being the first person to wear clothes made out of the same stuff they made ship sails with? Haha
  17. Italy is my favorite country is Italy. I want to share some surprising facts about Italy.Italy has three active volcanoes: Vesuvius, Etna, and Stromboli.Italy has 20 regions and 6 islands. 18. This is so interesting what you can learn from other people things like where banks came from. They are things that we looked at every day but I never look at them and go "I wonder where they came from" I've got a few fun fact to add to the mix myself.
the word Italy originated from the word Italia. Italian literally means cost land on calf land and it is thought that it originates from the head of the bull that was the symbol for southern Italian tribes. Italy's offical name us actually republico Italians. This means the republic of Italy.
  19. Repubblica Italiana.
  20. I think this is an interesting phenomena that has to do with the weather. New York City is about the same latitude as Naples Italy, however it only snows briefly once every several years in Naples, while in New York snow is very frequent in the winter.
