To my mind this lady is the most beautiful I have ever seen, even at the age she is currently. I'm sure that a lot of people would agree but does anyone have their own favourite Italian film star?

I agree, she is very beautiful still. I also like Gina Lollobrigida and Claudia Cardinali although I think Sophia is the most famous. I cannot think of any younger actresses though.

Definitely she is. She wears her age well. I think that she is the most famous star that came from Italy and I love to watch movies with her in them.

Today is World Pasta Day and guess what Sophia is eating?

Sophia Loren is without a doubt the most captivating Italian actress of all time. In my opinion Monica Bellucci is the greatest of the younger generation, but she still can't match Sophia in her prime.

She's so fabulous, I wish I could be as pretty as she is :)
I think Monica Belluci is another beautiful and talented Italian movie star. And she looks ageless!
I just realised I don't know any Italian male movie stars, though :P

@Mosquito, you say you don't know any Italian male actors.. Do you know Marcello Mastroianni? One of his most famous movies he is usually remembered for is Fellini's La Dolce Vita, with that famous scene of him and Anita Ekberg at Rome's Fontana di Trevi.

He also costarred several movies with Sofia Loren, like Vittorio de Sica's "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" and "Too Bad She's Bad", the first movie they shot together.

Besides him, though, I have a hard time trying to find off the top of my head some famous contemporary Italian male actors. Oh, never mind.. I just did :D: Roberto Benigni!! LOL

I'm pretty sure I've heard the name "Marcello Mastroianni" and I've seen "La Dolce Vita", but I couldn't remember what he looked like. After seeing the photo on his Wikipedia page I don't really recognize him... I guess I need to watch more Italian movies.
I do know Roberto Benigni, though! :D

I am pretty sure you know who Roberto Benigni is @Mosquito, you maybe don't recall his name now.

He is the funny Italian actor that starred and directed La Vita è Bella (Life is Beautiful) which won three Oscars back in 1997. The movie is about Guido, a young Jewish man (Benigni), that tries to keep his son from suffering the atrocities of World War II using his humour and imagination. The movie is marked by the alternation of exhilarating moments of laughter with very touching and moving bits.

If you don't recall the movie, you might recall the memorable moment in which Benigni receives the Oscar–announced by Sofia Loren, incidentally :). He goes completely wild, standing on top of the seats' backrests and going up the steps jumping and hugging Sofia prolongedly–who gets very emotional during his speech. And it is hard not to get emotional as you listen to his speech, don't you think?

Sofia Loren is stunning but I have to say that Monica Belluci has always been one of my favorite looking women of all time. Amazing looking woman! But maybe that also goes to show how few Italian actresses I actually know, as I can't think of any other names to throw into the discussion....

One of the world's most famous Italian actress that Sofia Loren is. Is that spaghetti she is eating? I think it's spaghetti. No, I'm pretty sure that she is having a bowl of spaghetti.

I love Sophia Loren. I think she is the epitome of a classic beauty. That sort of elegance that emanates from within her without even trying would really captivate you in ways you couldn't imagine. I'd love to be like her someday! A timeless Italian Beauty!

I was just browsing through the galleries and I must admit that you're absolutely right. She is beautiful, even now, when she's older. And in her youth, she had been stunning. These two photos show it all:

I think she can compare with Merlin Monroe. These photos are simply timeless, don't you agree?

The first time I've heard of Sophia Loren was in my English class. Our teacher was a very passionate woman from Sicily (is that even surprising?) and she told us the story of how Loren entered busy rooms and everyone would stop still and turn to look at her and she would just walk in with a mix of grace and carelessness. Loren's friend or assistant was gaping at the sight of the effect she had and expressed it to Loren. Apparently, Sophia Loren just said, "I'm Sophia Loren", like a self-explanatory obviousness, and that was that.

My teacher used this example to talk of self-confidence and charisma.

I mean, today we hunt stars down and paparazzi breach their privacy all the time but... I think back in the day, stars like Loren and Hepburn and others were more respected, revered even.

Oh God, I adore A.Hepburn!! If someone can compare with her, then I truly respect that. Your example is excellent, really. I had imagine the whole scene in my mind perfectly, especially the ''I'm Sophia Loren'' part.

Yes! Talking about Audrey... How great was Roman Holiday? :D Italy for a runaway princess!
What I like of Hepburn and of Monroe is that they are not just actresses or singers or stars; if young girls want to take them for idols, they'd soon discover how those women helped people and charity and all. I don't know too much about Sophia Loren outside of her works, though, so I should look into that.
