I've heard a lot about Sicily and in fact it's a stunning place, but not only due to it's natural beauties, I mean, the Greek ruins for example are something that aren't seen in many other parts in the world. I think it's the perfect destiny for many couples who enjoy a summer destination and at the same time an historic place to visit. Have you been there, what are your thoughts about Sicily?

This is an awesome picture. After reading a lot about Greek Mythology and have covered it extensively in high school, I would love to visit these ruins some day. I believe some of the best preserved ancient Greek temples in the world are in Sicily.

It's natural that you can find Greek ruins in Sicily, as after all, the Southern Italy is also known as Magna Graecia, we refer to it like that because of the tremendous Greek influence there. Greek culture had reached Rome (first Roman kingdom then empire) through these southern points. Aggrigento is a very important cultural centre. Phoenician influence can be traced similarly.

I love seeing these remnants of past. They make me think about how difficult it had been to communicate before and how well people had managed. I bet that a lot of merchants in Sicily were bilingual - speaking both Latin and Greek, just like many authors and famous orators. Ancient Greece has given us a lot. It's too bad we can't see how beautiful this ruin had been once in full glory... I bet it could have compared with the great temples in Athens.

The Greeks migrated to Sicily around 200 B.C. so its unsurprising that there are a lot of Greek ruins in the area. Sicilian culture is also heavily influenced by the Greek culture.

I would love to go to Sicily, there is so much history. It was once one of the most powerful nations in the area of what eventually became Italy.

And just imagine how many of these beauties there are - scattered all over the island.

If I ever came to Sicily, I wouldn't know where to go first and what to see - I simply couldn't be able to choose just one or two attractions - I'd want to see them all, especially the ruins. Many people think they're not really worth seeing, however, I have a different opinion. For me, they're a valuable part of the past and they definitely shouldn't be forgotten.

There is a lot of history between the Greeks and the Italian, that is why their architecture is present in both countries. I'd love to visit Sicily, that is on my to do list, I love the Mediterranean so it would be the perfect destination to me.

I completely agree with you. I wonder how many of the temples were here. I only know of a few better known ones. I'd like to do some research and I'll get back to you once I compile a nice list ;)

I'd love to see that list Aurelia, I am pretty sure there are some stunning places. Just to imagine that both Italians (or Romans as they were called) and Greeks ruled the world and not they are just another country. Well, both Portugal and Spain were huge empires once.
