Well, like there aren't enough bad news out there, now I read about this one. So sad...

The restaurant where the famous Tiramisu was invented is forced to close down, because of the economic crisis. The restaurant has quite some extensive financial difficulties and will close down at the end of this month.

It seems Italians prefer to eat out at cheaper restaurant or bars or fast food joints, to the lack of customers proved to be 'fatal' for the Le Beccherie, the restaurant in Treviso.

This is really sad news considering this place invented the tiramisu.

You would of thought the local province would help a little to not see it close down. Surely this place could make money for being the home of tiramisu.

Perhaps they will if it goes bust. After all, it is currently in private hands.

Well, this is a sad news although it is not surprising. Europe has been in recession at least for the past 5 years and Italy is not exempted from that. A lot of people have definitely changed their lifestyles and live in a more frugal way. Eating out is becoming a luxury for some families.

Wow, like everyone else is saying this is really sad news to read!I'm surprised that the restaurant isn't frequented by tourists, you think there would be tons of tourists that would want to visit the place where the famous dessert was invented! Heck, even I wouldn't mind checking it out.

I'm surprised about this as well.
Maybe people don't really know that that is the exact restaurant where to Tiramisu was invented, I didn't know either until I read the news.

Wander_n_wonder, you have a point too, most Italians are cutting back on expenses, this recession is really affecting all of us.
If Italians don't eat out as much anymore, you'd think tourists can 'help', like erika said, but even tourists, they are fewer each year and even they are now looking for cheaper accommodation and for good, cheaper deals..

That's such a shame. I guess the restaurant wasn't in a place that has a heavy tourist footfall, otherwise I am sure it would have been able to keep going. I just hate it when places that have such an important place in a country's history and heritage end up going under. There should be a public campaign to keep it going!

That is really sad. Tiramisu is definitely one of my favorites, and I could eat it day and night. Well, the crisis hits everyone, but it hits some a bit harder. Especially if the prices there were a bit higher than some other places. I understand the service is better if the price is higher, but not many can always afford the best service there is.

This is such a shame, but unfortunately, true.
Tiramisu is my favourite too. I imagine it is the same for many people. It's so sad that the tradition is the one that suffers the most in times like these. These small vendors are the ones at loss here, unable to keep up with the rising costs and demands. Only big chain stores and restaurants can ''survive'', to be honest. We don't pay for quality anymore, we pay the brand, if we can afford it. Unfortunately, most of us cannot, and when we find ourselves trying to make ends meet, even a piece of tiramisu can seem like a luxury.

This is a really bad news and I think they should have never done that. Such restaurants mean a lot to people and I think that many people including me are quite disheartened by such events. I d not even understand on why do such events actually take place. The government should do their best to help the people to protect these places. But I do not see this happening, which is very sad.

They should but they don't. Unfortunately, no one recognises the potential and the value of these places until they are gone - and even then, they do little to protect them. Tradition should be kept and valued. Tiramisu, for example, is one of the most popular Italian recipes. Couldn't it have become an attraction for tourists, if nothing else? Taste the original tiramisu - sounds tempting, doesn't it? No matter the price.

This is sad news. This unfortunately happens pretty often. At least the restaurant will always be known for creating Tiramisu. I am surprised for that reason alone it wasn't able to establish itself as a tourist attraction.
