The best slice of pizza I have ever had in my life was from a little place right next to Vatican city! It was a thick doughy crust coated in olive oil. It had shredded potatoes on top with lots of cheese, sage and Rosemary. They browned the top until it had that perfect crunch! It was absolutely delicious!!

I had a margherita pizza in Naples and it was authentic, with a very fine thin crust. The atmosphere was the best and the wine that went with it. I don't remember how much it was, but it was huge and was very cheap. Pizza is usually only at lunchtime or a snack and I used to buy a slice (huge) whenever I was out instead of having a meal. I had a nice one at Lucca where the slice was equivalent to a quarter of a large pizza here in the UK.

Oh, even just the words "real Italian pizza" make my mouth water. I can visualize a big home-built oven with large trays dripping with delicious cheese! The smell of pizza dough, roasted tomatoes, garlic, mushrooms and oregano! What a feast! And all that accompanied by a glass of sparkly San Pellegrino mineral water with a slice of lemon... aaah!!! :)

Real Italian Pizza is something that is unique to the world and no one will real understand the true difference until they taste it. Many people think the pizza they have in other countries is authentic because it tastes pretty good, and why not when it is piled with cheese. Cheese makes everything taste good, but it is nothing in comparison to the real thing.

^ That is so true! Italian pizza is unique, you can't find the same taste anywhere else in this world, not even if the chef is Italian, born and raised!

For one thing, not all pizza recipes are the same, each chef has their own 'style', but I think that what makes Italian pizza so special and tasty is not necessarily the recipe, but the ingredients! Like we already discussed it on this very forum :) some Italian products are indeed found in other countries too (like, olive oil, tomatoes &tomato sauce or mozzarella, since we're talking pizza), but they are not the same, they don't taste the same, even if they say they're imported from Italy.

I guess that if someone wants to have a taste of the Italian pizza, they'd have to come visit! :D It's totally worth it, by the way ;)

Best I've had was in a little pizzeria in Rome. It was so authentic, and it tasted so good. There's a huge difference between pizza chains like Pizza Hut, Dominos, etc. and the real thing in Italy. You really have to taste it to understand the difference.

The thing I love about real Italian pizza is that it's simple. Just a few ingredients, but the freshness and the flavors all seem to work so well together. I've never tried a pizza with potatoes on it like the one you mentioned, but I'll have to be on the lookout for it the next time I'm in Italy. My favorite Italian pizza was just fresh tomatoes, cheese and basil. 3 ingredients for the toppings but the taste was just out of this world!

I agree. Real Italian pizza is so different from the ones you get in other countries. They're far fresher and simpler. I like the simplest pizzas too: tomatoes, cheese and basil is a classic that will never grow old.

Indeed - reminds me of the saying "the simple things in life are often the best". You don't need a whole bunch of crazy ingredients or a list that's a mile long of toppings. Just stick to things that work well together and focus on fresh ingredients and the result is generally a winner!

Yes definitely! I totally agree with that. If you have too many toppings, the flavor of the pizza just gets lost! I like simple margarita pizza. Or something with prosciutto.

Pizza in Italy is definitely unique to that country, and your not going to be able to get anything close to it, anywhere else in the world.

People talk about places like pizza express and pizza hut, and I enjoy going to them aswell, they are a million miles away from what pizza really is. I wouldn't go as far as to say that authentic Italian pizza is an acquired taste, but I'm sure most people wouldn't expect it to look and fast like it does.

Yes. Italian pizza is completely different to the fast food chains that most people are used to. I think it's like that with all cuisines though - the food you get in the actual country won't every be found in any other country.

When one hears authentic pizza, the country Italy is always associated with it. I am sure each city in Italy has their own version though; I know Naples has their world famous Neapolitan Pizza. From this thread, the pizza in Vatican and Rome are also mentioned. Which city in Italy serves the best authentic Italian pizza?

Like what's already been said, I think each country will put their own unique twist to it, especially to make it more popular with local people. For instance the pizza base, in Italy I very much doubt you'll find thick crust or stuffed crust pizza's, that's just unique to the fast food chains because its what people want, it's sells and makes them money, and at the end of the day, a business is more concerned with money, rather than being traditional and authentic.

If you want to eat the real pizza you should go to Naples where it has been invented of course but in general I would say that in the whole italian peninsula is able to make a good pizza of course it depends from who and where you will order a pizza.

I've never been to Naples before, but if I do, the first thing I'll do is try the pizza there! I doubt it would be a whole lot different to the other pizzas available in other parts of Italy, but still - trying a delicacy in the place it was invented has its own charm.

This might be a dumb question but are the mainstream pizza places even available to order from in Italy, like dominoes and pizza hut? Obviously if your on vacation then your not going to eat in one of them as opposed to a traditional Italian place, but I'm assuming that they're available if people want them?

Definetly. I did sometime ago in a pizzeria located in the centre of Napels and it was absolutely tasty and delicious! The price was a bit too high for my wallet but it quite worth it.
