Other foods

What are the other foods that Italian people eat besides pasta and pizza?

I would like to know more since I like both pasta and pizza. I would like to try out other foods an Italian does eat.

Re: Other foods

There are a huge variety of dishes that are considered Italian. Everything from desserts, fish, rice dishes. If you're really curious just run a Google search for an elaborate list :)

I think that it will be a great mistake if you will not taste the italian desserts while being in Italy. I have tasted it in many restaurants in Italy and I would like to note that all desserts were absolutely perfect.

If you dont know the answer then just ignore this thread. Dont tell anyone to use the search engine since everyone already knows that.

Dont bother telling anyone what you know.

Re: Other foods

I think that there is one important thing to remember here. Italian meals are not just pasta or pizza. It is a balanced mix of fresh foods.

A typical service in a restaurant could be:

1) Antipasto (before the meal)
The most traditional offerings are cured meats, marinated vegetables, olives, peperoni (not to be confused with the meat), which are marinated small peppers, and various cheeses. Other additions may be anchovies or bruschetta toasted bread, upon which one may stack the meats or cheeses. The antipasto is usually topped off with some olive oil.
Meats for antipasto may include mortadella, salami, ham and coppa.

2) Primo (first dish)
Could be pasta, risotto, soup etc..

3) Secondo (second Dish)
Could be a steak of meat or fresh fish

4) Contorno (vegetables) or salad

6) Dolce (Dessert) Cake, fruit or ice cream. (all fresh)

5) Digestive drink such as Limoncello, Amaro etc (some may skip this if they dont drink)

6) Coffee

So yes, pasta is usually eaten daily (sometimes risotto) but there are hundreds of different things you can make with pasta and they are all different in there own ways.

I believe that seasonings are also a big part of this. I have just recently started to watch a cooking show and this lady gives things twists by the seasonings that she uses.

Italian people eat with the "Cucina Mediterranea Philosophy"
The Cucina Mediterranea, or Dieta Mediterranea involves the use of various ingredients, natural and healthy, like for example olive oil, fresh vegetables, tomato sauce (rich in important antioxidant for the heart healt), canned fish or fresh fish...
Today, it's very easy to find italian food online.

Although pasta and rice might be a staple food in Italy, the different array of sauces, spices, meats, cheese as well as vegetables added to the dish makes it original or different each time.

Italians close to the coast and on the islands eat a lot of fresh fish. When people say "Mediterranean diet" they're not referring to pizza and pasta. They're talking about all the fresh fish, herbs, vegetables and olive oil that Italians and other Mediterranean people enjoy.
