How do Italians side when it comes to finding a new president. What do the people really want for the direction of the country?

Frankly, I almost never follow the politics. Mainly because I can't understand them, and second of all, I don't believe in anything politicians promise :P Which brings me to your question, what do Italians expect from the new president.
Well, I assume it is what everyone expects from their leader: better times.

Currently, Italy is not doing very well, there are a lot of factors that contributed to it's current situation (poor economy... and if the media is telling us the truth, it's getting worse), but there have been so many changes in the "politics world" in the last few years, that each former government (each former prime minister) made several mistakes that the new government needs to fix, and it just seems to me there's a lot of chaos going on. So, I think that, what most Italians and the rest of us who came here to make a better life for ourselves expect the same thing, for the economy to change.

The president in Italy is elected by the parliament ( read parties ).
Parties use to keep secret their real candidate's name, different names leak that might be eventually chosen, but you can't know until its done.
So, siding under these conditions becomes a bit difficult.

Well, I'm not sure this change will lead to something drastic. The president in Italy actually doesn't have much power and his functions are pretty much limited.

Italy is a peaceful country and it has never experienced any violence because of politics. You should consider having a president who is development conscious and ready to work with everyone. I know Italy has more Christians who focus on living in peace.
