Every country has destinations which tourists will prefer for different reasons. But same as every other country which when you visit there are places you just must visit if at all you want to tell your friends you were there because that's the first thing they'll ask you, "did you see . . .?"

So here's a question as there are numerous tourist attractions in Italy and as you can't visit them all in one trip, what are the places you just must visit?

Italy is a pretty large place, with lots of areas that would definitely suit your needs. Whether you are into religious or renaissance art, or whether or not you would love some scenic sights while canoeing through the rivers and streams, you can definitely find them in Italy, and there's really no specific place that you should go. Food is also varied in different parts, so if you want to get a taste of everything, then I suggest you start packing, and go backpacking through the different cities in Italy :)

I think this has been asked before, but it depends on what you want to see and do. If you like art, buildings or culture, or maybe hiking instead.

It also depends on your finances, and time. I've studied Italian history for years so what I consider a must see, may not be what others want to see. People do say you must see Rome, and it's an incredible city, but much larger than people imagine. I'm not a tourist; I'm a traveler and as such I choose places to visit and not to tick off a list. For those who do want to tick things off a list, then a guided tour is best for you.

I guess I am different, I don't go to must see places, I go to place I wish to see for a reason. I've seen hundreds (and I mean that) of churches in Italy, and I don't need to see any more unless I have a reason to.

My personal preferences are around food and historical building, museums.

So I would visit a lot of churches and historical grounds, while keep asking about recipes and trying to eat in small family-owned restaurants. My must see places would consist of big guide-book sights and small villages full of special country people.

To me, it's definitely Rome, Venice, Milan and Florence. These cities have contributed a lot to the Italian history. They are also kind of stunning. I truly love then and I can't wait to get back there again.
