I've just found out that megabus runs in Bolgna, Florence, La Spezia, Rome, Turin, Siena, Verona, Venice, Pisa, Milan, Naples, Padua, and Genoa which is great. If you book early you can get a ticket for £1 plus a booking fee, I just checked you can go from Venice to Florence for £1 each way, and I doubt you can get any cheaper.

I have the perfect excuse to explore Italy again on a budget.

Here in the UK there are some brilliant deals with megabus if your travelling on a budget.

While I don't know anybody who's been to Italy on one, I know a couple who went to the south of France on one and it cost them £7 there and back...for BOTH of them, so you can't argue with them prices.

Of course the only downside is the length of time you'll spend travelling, but if it means your practically travelling for free, I could live with that

What an awesome deal. I wouldn't say that traveling by bus is my favorite mode of transport, but really, like @pwarbi said they have some prices that you just can't argue with. Right now I'm trying to plan travels on a budget (life is expensive and sadly my travel budget is the first thing that gets whittled down, most of the time!) so something like this is very useful information.

Glad that you shared it with us - now, it's time for me to do some more research about it!

I've used megabus in the US and I have always had good journeys. I looked at the travel times in Italy and they are similar to train times, plus you don't have to change trains. With traveling I think you should never think about the time spent, because delays happen and it's life. Commuting is a a different matter, but when you travel to explore, rushing ruins it all, plus on a bus you get to meet more people and often the bus stations are closer to town.

Travelling for me is all part of the holiday and you have to just try and make the most of it.

If you consider that your holiday starts as soon as you board the coach, train or plane rather than when you actually get to your destination, you'll enjoy it a lot better.

True point about getting to meet people - and actually, I've met some great friends when I've been traveling on public transport in various countries. Some of those people I've met are still friends that I keep in contact with several years later, so that's nice!

I like what you said too about not worrying about time so much, since rushing really does become stressful and takes the relaxation and enjoyment out of a vacation.

You see in Italy people don't rush about so much, the bus comes when it does, it arrives when it does and if it's late (in ritardo) then that's normal. I've caught buses before in Italy and often you just wait, get to know the locals who are getting the bus to make sure it's the right one, or if they have heard of any changes or delays.

The only quick way to get anywhere in Italy is to fly, but even then the planes will get delayed. Megabus isn't only about money, but also the timings and the routes. Yes, you can work around them, but I speak as a solo traveler and not a tourist with a partner or children. That would be a different kind of holiday rather than traveling. When I travel, I arrive and stay as long as I like then decide where to next. I remember waking up in Rome one day and deciding where to go next and turned up at the train station, met some Canadian students there and ended up on a train to Nice with them.

While I think megabus is definitely an option, I was also talking as a solo traveller rather than for a family holiday.

I think if you're taking the wife and children then megabus wouldn't be an option and it would be best to stick to the more traditional types of holiday travel.
