Statistics say that 2 out of 5 young Italians (age 18 to 29) are out of a job. I was one of them too so I know how that feels!
Statistics also say that the national unemployment rate is only 12%.

That being said, the government decided to spend 1.5bn euros to help young people get a job.
The funds include tax breaks for companies that will hire them and the targeted areas are mainly in Southern Italy.

What do you think of the initiative? Will it work?

I think it's a good idea but what really needs to be done is create the jobs in the first place.

Many companies are still closing down and right now there are not many job vacancies for anyone let alone the younger generation.

Companies will only employ people if they need the extra workforce.

They need to make Italy a good place for investors to create new jobs. They are never going to do this unless they start cutting down the huge amount of taxes that they have to pay.

It's not that Italian companies don't employ the younger generation, it is because in last 6 - 7 years there has been no growth.

I really think they need to look more into the root of the problem.

However, at least they are trying something to resolve the problem.

That is true, everyone needs work, not only young people.
I'm still in that category but I soon won't be anymore, does that mean they will hire a young person over me? What if I had a family? Don't over 30 people deserve this as well?

Also, there is already something that employers make use of, the contract of apprendistato. It's for people under 30 and it's a contract that states that you are not an "operaio" just yet, but you're an "apprendista" and are still learning how to do the work.
While the contract is valid, they can't fire you even if you make mistakes. You get less salary than an operaio and the company pays less tax too.

I think many companies also abuse these type of contracts. In short, they make the young on apprendista type contracts do the same work as the those on a normal contract without giving them the correct supervision or incentive to learn just to save money.

It's true that in southern Italy many people work in Nero and I'm wondering why they are targeting mainly southern Italy.

I'm wondering if they are trying to transfer those without contracts to some kind of new contract for the young and a chance for companies to make workers regular.

I try to be positive about work related topics in Italy but it really is a sad situation for all. Many companies will abuse the system where they can to save money.
