I heard that Italian is a little similar to Spanish. Is this true? If so, maybe learning Spanish wouldn't be too difficult.

Italian and Spanish are both Romance languages so they are closer than say German and Italian. They are much closer than Arabic and Italian. They are much, much closer than Cantonese and Italian. Generally speaking if you already speak one of the Romance languages, it's relatively easy to learn a second Romance language.

I've taken classes in French and Spanish and I've found Italian much easier to learn as a result. There are similarities, yes. I do think that makes it easier to learn if you already know Spanish. I think that either way, it will be worth it to learn.

Yes, like already mentioned they are both romance languages making them very similar. After learning one you should have a much easier time learning another one. I've learned both and they have a plentiful amount of cognates. Though, and this might just be me, but I've had trouble confusing them in the past. As in someone would speak in Italian and I would respond in Spanish. Then again this might just be me. :p

I can speak French and German so I suppose Italian wouldn't be too difficult. I am struck by the similarity of certain words in different languages and I can quite appreciate how you can get words mixed up!

Cognates have proven to be a little bit confusing for me too. I've done the same thing with numbers, colors, and question words. It's very embarrassing! Hopefully I can get out of that habit while I'm still learning.

Its glad to know other people have similar experiences. Though the similarities do make the language much easier to learn when you already know Spanish. So I guess it's a fair trade off.

Italian and spanish share similarities in numbers, colours, dates ect. because both are Romance languages derived from latin. Rome sent colonists to its new, Hispania, province after defeating many Iberian tribes. The eastern roman empire called it Espana, after making a settlement in the south eastern side in 6oo AD. That is how the similarities with Spanish and Italian work. Since Rome was in Italy and the Eastern Roman Empire traversed italian peninsula in 600 AD to clear out Barbarian invaders you can sense an historical association right away . If you are interested in this make sure you learn about the history of the country and learning will be more fun.

Honestly, I don't find the two languages to be that similar. Some words sound alike, yes, but I hear a lot of spanish people speaking their native language and I sincerely cannot understand a thing they're saying.
