I have to say, Italians really know their way around 'gelato' !
I'm now a regular customer at the gelateria in my area, it is said it's the best in town and they're not kidding!

Do you enjoy Italian ice-cream as well? Can you even compare it to the ice cream they sell in supermarkets?

I sometimes splurge on authentic Italian gelato sold in a small deli near my house. I prefer to eat this as a treat than spend money on the regular kind you see in the big shops. I simply love the consistency and flavour of gelato, and it tends to be lower in fat too.

In summer I'm a big fan of ice-cream too and yes, in Italy you can find some shop of "gelato artigianale" that are really artist in their work

I love a good home-made ice cream, and I tasted Italian ice cream in my youth, made by the famous Minchella family, which was delicious. Is it really as expensive in Italy as the recent story in the news, where a tourist paid 60 Euro for four cones in a place in Rome?

Wow, I heard about that story too.
There were 4 tourists, 2 brothers and their wives, they came to visit Rome and have paid 64 euros for 4 ice-creams.

Now, I don't really know what to believe. A lady who works there said that the prices are right in front of your nose and they could have chosen a cheaper ice-cream. Then they also say that there were others who were not happy about the cost of ice-cream (some Spanish tourists were complaining about the same gelateria a week earlier).

I tend to agree with the Italians and not with the tourists though.
First of all, the prices are exposed for you to see. If you see that an ice cream costs 20 Euros, don't buy it! You then choose the ice cream, the cashier tells you it costs 64 euros in total, you give her the money but it's still you who complains... why?

A "normal" ice cream, one you buy at a gelateria, one that they make in front of you (figuratively speaking, they make it in the back where they have the kitchen :P) and they make it with their own recipe, costs about 2 Euros, even less if you buy a small one.

I love gelato. I need to find a place that sells gelato near me. I sometimes will splurge on gelato from the grocery store. One of my favorite flavors has to be Pistachio flavored gelato.

I do love gelato. A friend recommended it 4 years ago and I have been hooked ever since. I am so glad they make it in stores now. It may not be authentic but it comes close enough. Love the original.

Nothing compares to store-bought anything. I have been to a small Italian restaurant where they served gelato and it was by-far the best ice cream I have ever had. I've yet to try the gelato ice cream they sell at the grocery store because I'm afraid it won't be as good.

I heard that Italian gelato is a world's favorite! I have tasted a couple of the Italian desserts and I quite frankly think that they are really good. I had the chocolate flavored one, which is not my favorite flavor. I would like to try a different flavor next time, and perhaps have it with a slice of apple pie or crusty ravioli cakes.

Not even close, Italian ice cream can not be compared to the regular ice cream that is being sold in the supermarkets, it is special in its own way, a taste you can not confuse with any other.

I have been to Rome several times and to be honest with you in a Gelateria you typically have to pay for your order before you can even tell your server what you want. Unless of course you are being served at the table, in that case you are selecting off a menu that shows the prices. This is from my experience. I don't think I have paid more that 8 euros for gelato in any city including Venice and Capri which are typically more expensive cities.

I would go as far as saying that there seemed to be a gelato store in almost every turn in the city center of Rome. There was even one we frequented near The Vatican everyday because of the heat of the summer. My favorite was the different fruit flavors in the store, and we never paid more than 3 euros each.

I think that Italian ice-cream has got to be amongst the best in the world. Also, it is a big tradition to take your girl/boyfriend out to a Gelateria.
Unfortunately, I can't personally partake of most of the gelatos, as their ingredients include milk and sugar. But I have come across some amazing vegan ice-cream made with almond milk and cashews that left me speechless! :) Absolutely delicious!

Ever since I have came to Italy, I have been a fan of gelato. Each shop has a variety of flavors so I try to get different flavors each time I go to a Gelato shop. My favorite flavors, though are double chocolate, pistachio, and orange sherbet. Italian gelato definitely taste more rich than American ice-cream.

You know gelato is good when you plan summer trips around the best gelaterie!
I don't think most of us italians realise how good we have it compared to other countries. Here you can buy good ice-cream basically everywhere, and when you actually find a great gelateria, oh god, it's so fresh! A great strawberry gelato (my favourite) tastes like strawberries and magic, you can't taste the other ingredients.

Gelato is definitely incomparable to other ice creams. I so miss good gelato. Although there are many "gelato shops" in the states, they don't hold up to a true Italian gelateria. It is a specialty that cannot be replicated unless you know the true essence of gelato. My favorite is pistachio. There is something about it that is refreshing and rich at the same time.

I am living in the south of Austria. We have a lot of Italian ice cream parlors here in our city. As I know everyone of my friends go in summer more times a week and buy Italian ice cream. You cannot compare it to ice cream from the supermarket, because as far as I can see the ice cream in the supermarket contains a lot more sugar. In the supermarket you also do not have so much different kinds of ice cream to choose like strawberry, banana, vanilla or some other kind of ice cream. That is also a big advantage of ice cream parlors. They offer the people a variety of ice cream.

I've only had gelato a few times, and (don't lynch me for this!) I don't really understand all the hype. A lot of my friend love gelato, and there are places that sell Gelato both fresh and in an container (Hello Whole Foods) but I've never really been big on it. I don't know if it's just the price that puts me off, since gelato is generally very expensive where I am or that it's more sugary then simple ice cream. :( It's fine and dandy for a special treat, but I'll be sticking with my normal ice cream, me thinks.
