If you've never tried it, you must. It's usually served in a glass and is thick liquid chocolate and very filling. Often they will give you a glass of water too as it is like a liquid dessert. Nothing like the weak, milky drinks you find elsewhere.

The best one I had was in Vernazza in the Cinq Terre as I stopped for a break and I had a huge glass which I could barely finish, but one I don't like waste and it was delicious, two, I was walking it off and lastly, never offend a bar owner by not finishing anything they serve you!

I've just had one this week!
I was out with a friend and she was like "let's stop and have coffee", because everyone here drinks coffee like it's water :D lol :P but we saw the bar was serving hot chocolate.

I think it's a thing here, as soon as winter is approaching, most bars will serve customers a few varieties of hot chocolate. There's hot chocolate with mint, with whipped cream, with all sorts of things and it's so good! Like you said, not at all like the milky drinks you buy everywhere else.

Since we're on the subject, I also enjoy a hot cup of coffee at home, during winter. I usually buy the Ciobar type, and prepare it with milk, on the stove... it's so good! But not as good as the Italian hot chocolate I had just a few days ago :P

Do you have a recipe for a hot chocolate? Is it different from the hot cocoa recipe? I have never been to an Italian restaurant that serves a cup of hot chocolate before. Maybe it's because I'm not a fancy eater. I usually ask for "the specials" from the chefs, and I often try the recipe at home whenever I could.

I have never tried till now as I knew nothing about it until now. But looking at the description over here I think it is a great drink that I must absolutely try. The reviews over here are quite good due to which my mouth is already watering. I love chocolate and this would be the best way to have it.

You had me at chocolate, but that sounds so heavenly. I really need to go to Italy. And Rosie, Italy sounds like a place I would enjoy because I drink coffee like it's water sometimes. Thanks for the tip Gabe! :)

Yes! I make these a few times a month because they're so delicious. The trick is to use a bit of cornstarch to thicken it; the texture is amazing. I also add some nutmeg and clove to mine because I think it gives it a really unique taste! You should try to make them at home it's so easy.

When I was Italy, I was enamored by the great flavor and consistency of their hot chocolate. The Swiss Miss brand doesn't compare. It was a thick and creamy dessert in a cup.

I have never tried one, but from the way of description, it sounds real thick and good, thanks for the tip about not finishing what a bar owner has served you, I will always remember that.

It sounds absolutely delicious. I was never a fan of the hot chocolate in the UK, because it's normally all runny and milky, and you just get a hint of cocoa. I've had thick, rich and creamy hot chocolate once before, but I think next time I visit Italy I should definitely buy one!

Yes - they're so much more indulgent than other places, though I'm convinced Europe has the best hot chocolate of anywhere. I think even better than Italian hot chocolate was one I had when I was in Belgium - I still dream of it to this day!

Agreed - I don't think the incredible hot chocolate is specifically an Italy thing, I think it's a Europe thing. I've had chocolate in Belgium, Netherlands, Italy and Germany (only once in Italy though). They were all very thick, rich, creamy and chocolatey. Absolutely delicious.

In European cafes it is often served, yes, you can find it, but in Italy you can find it in the smallest bar in a tiny town. Most continental places do offer it, but I have yet to find one thicker than the one I have had in Italy.

The french versions are better than the UK ones, but not by much, but if you go to an Italian run place wherever you are in the world, you stand a better chance of getting a decent, thick hot chocolate.

You're probably right. Whatever the case, compared to Europe, British hot chocolate doesn't stand a chance.

27 Of The Greatest Places In The World To Get Hot Chocolate

Check out this list - its some of the apparent best places in the world to get hot chocolate.

Number 11 is a place in Florence, and it really does look like one of the most thick and decadent on the list!

Wow! You got me at "thick liquid chocolate" and this list is also making me drool. I did not know that the Italians also have bragging rights for their hot chocolate.
From the description you gave, sounds like the Italian hot chocolate is sinfully to die for.

I've never had Italian hot chocolate, however I've had hot chocolate in Spain and it sounds pretty similar. It was extremely thick similar to soup. You had to eat it with a spoon. It was so good to dip churros in.
