Do you enjoy Italian sweets such as cookies and cakes?
I have to say, I do love a piece of cake but not all Italian cakes are that great. Maybe I bought them from the wrong places, I don't know, but I prefer to bake them myself.

What's your opinion? Do you enjoy all Italian cakes? Can you recommend some really good ones?

I also prefer to bake my own. I find many Italian cookies that I get from the bakery don't have a lot of chocolate in them which I love. I do love the Italian rainbow cookies though. I can never make them as good as the Italian bakeries do.

My favorite Italian sweet is probably one of the most simple things you could make, but my Nonna always made it for us. It's not a cake or a cookie but I still recommend it!

It's called Crostoli:

This isn't my Nonna's recipe (sadly I don't have it) but I don't think she used any brandy in hers.

There is one type of cookie I used to get a lot as a kid, but I cannot remember the name of it and I'm not sure if it was 100% Italian or not. Perhaps some of you may know the name. It was in the shape of a large flower, and was made by dipping what looked like a branding iron in the shape of a flower into some batter, then immediately dipped into hot frying oil. Once they started to crisp up and fry they would fall off the cooking utensil and float in the oil. The cookies would then be scooped out, drained and dusted with powdered sugar. They were very flaky and light. Sometimes they would be dyed in pastel colors such as pink and green.

Biscotti and other various hard crispy cookies were commonplace in our household. I loved anything I could dip into some coffee. We would also usually spike the coffee a bit with some whiskey, along with a little sugar and milk.
