Often in the UK we get a mix of standards with B&Bs. Some of them can be amazing while others can be the worst thing you can do to your holiday. It's honestly just a hit and miss process you can't really tell unless you stay there reviews do help but I often find it's best to go with the bigger hotel. I'm planning a trip to Italy after much pestering and begging and I cannot wait. I do not want to ruin my trip in any way whatsoever. What are B&Bs like in Italy and would I be better off staying in a hotel I really do not want to go over a £150 per night

Well, if you're on a budget, then I suggest you look for a nice B&B. They are always less expensive than hotels!
The thing is, it depends on the hotel, it depends on the staff, it also depends on what you think is acceptable and what is not!

I think the best thing you can do, when planning your trip, is to go online and read the reviews.
There is the website Hermann mentioned and there are my personal favorites: booking.com, airbnb and tripadvisor!

Just visit all these websites and see what pops out.
People are very honest in these reviews, you can also see pictures of what the place looks like and, based on the reivews, you'll see if they are genuine pics or if the reality is not exactly that.. (I have read mixed reviews on the 7 star hotel in Milan, for instance. Many say "wow what a beauty" and others say it's filthy... to each their own!)

Good luck! And if you find something good, let us know!

Wait, 150 gbp is like 170 euros or something, right? You can't find a good B&B with that budget??? The other thing you could try is air B&B as well.

There are so many factors; where you going, when you are going and how long you will stay. The bed and breakfasts are quaint in most places, but basic and the hotels are usually family run. Depending where you are there are few chains. I think you are better off in a hotel by the sounds of it as if you aren't happy with a bed and breakfast and complain, they will probably ask you to leave.

I think it depends whereabouts in Italy you are visiting and what type of holiday it is as to whether you choose a Hotel or a B&B. If i was staying in one of the major cities i would opt for a Hotel as it would be more functional for my needs. If i was staying in a seaside resort or a more rural location i would opt for a B&B. This is because the B&B's will probably run by an Italian family and you would be able to interact with them and learn about the local area and their customs. It would be a more relaxing experience than a Hotel.

My view is that it all comes down to environment as to which option you choose. In the city a Hotel would be more fitting with the type of holiday you are having and would be convenient for touring the city. In a rural location a B&B would be better as it would be a more personal experience, more relaxed and have that local feel. Budget of course would also be a major factor in your choice.

I think a lot would depend aswell on what you plan to do. When we go away we're not really that bothered about the accomodation as we spend most of our time out anyway, we really only use the hotel or B+B as a base, somewhere to store our things and sleep.
I try and find as cheap as I can, well...reletively speaking anyway, that then leaves a little more to spend on the actual fun part of the holiday.

I also have to say for 170 euro's a night you should be able to find something alright, depending what season your going in.

  • The thing is my husband is really really picky about where we sleep and the state of the place. Hes really picky about being clean.

Well obviously I want to know if the place is clean and hygenic. You can normally tell that though off the websites that you book off. Basic and simple is the way we always go but if your a bit wary then its probably best to look at other customers reviews, i tend to go off them more than the actual pictures or descriptions.

When I was in Rome we used airbnb.com to rent a place. The house and owner were lovely! I can't comment on Italian hotels as I've never been to one, but if you're going to Rome I would definitely check out airbnb. You can talk to people renting living space, discuss the price and you can get a feel for the place pretty quickly.

When you say renting living space, do you mean instead of staying in a hotel or B+B yoiu actually stay in somebody's home?

I don't think I'd like that idea to be honest, i know its popular in a lot of countries but I'd feel like an intruder if that makes sense? Like I'd be in the way and stopping somebody getting on with their usual everyday life...even though I'd be paying I'd still feel uncomfortable I think.

No, I meant that they had a second home, lol. But I'm sure you could do both, although I wouldn't want to live in somebody else's home either.

I heard a lot about Italy or UK Hotel feedback from my friends who visited there during their honeymoon, education tour, and family vacation. Some had said UK hotel is quite expensive and others said it was hard to find good place to stay. My friends shared to that they paid 200 pounds up overnight. What a place! I could see myself paying extravagantly in such hotel. Though, I can afford it but i don't like to spend or waste my money for just a hotel.

It's all about location and what's available. Historic places like Siena will have more small family hotels or bed and breakfasts and that is all there is. The modern hotels are located outside these places for obvious reasons. Cost is dependent on the area and not the quality of the accommodation all the time.

The fact is that Italy is not a cheap country, not at all. It has a privileged location in the center of Europe, right by the Mediterranean, with the Alps at the north and bordering with a lot of countries, so tourism there is expensive.

In my opinion it is a hit or miss I Italy as much as it is in the UK or anywhere else when it comes to B&B. If saving is a big priority then skip the hotel as hotels are very expensive in Italy, but do your research. There are a lot of reviews out there now, so that you can kind of get a sense of the B&B. I have to mention that there are some cheap hotels, but you may get very poor experience.

If you don't want to spend much, I would suggest a B&B. But overall, Italy isn't a cheap holiday country, and if you don't want to spend very much at all, Italy may not even be the right country. Hotels are generally quite expensive in Italy, so if you're looking to save, then definitely try and avoid them.

Another vote here for AirBnB. I haven't used them in Italy but I did use them for a trip to Hong Kong. We had an entire apartment to ourselves right in the middle of the city and it was a fraction of the price that a hotel would have cost. Also, it was nice to have a kitchen and living room to use as well.

I'll definitely be trying to search on AirBnB when I head back to Italy, I'm imagining that someone has probably got a lovely villa listed somewhere to stay at - and that would be just heavenly if you ask me!

This would highly depend on the arrangement that you prefer. Airbnb has options wherein you can rent the entire place or if you're on a tight budget then you can opt for either the private or shared room. If you feel uncomfortable living with other people, then you can choose the former. I think Airbnb is a practical option to hotels. You just have to read the reviews first, same as when booking a hotel.

There are pros and cons of each I think air BNB would be a great way to ‘live like an Italian’ more so then staying in a hotel. I am sure there are beautiful villas throughout the country that you would be able to stay in. However, you would need to know the area to know where to look on air BNB. I don’t do air BNB often so I personally would stick to a hotel. The concierge would also be able to provide directions and provide information on things to do throughout Italy.
