A producer of mozzarella cheese from Caserta (Campania) called La Baronia has gained certification of Halal Mozzarella.
Muslims around the world can now feast on one of Italy's most famous cheese.without breaking Islamic law.
The difference between halal and non halal mozzarella is not in the ingredients itself but in the way that it is made. One example is that alcohol based chemicals must not be used to clean equipment used to produce the cheese. Another is that halal products must display the date it was made as well as the used by date.
The crucial development here is that the Islamic community has been able to verify the procedures are correct and that there are no substances that, even accidentally, could render the product illegal for Islam.
La Baronia is opening the door to a massive market and the mozzarella consortium is encouraging other members to follow suit.
