If you had to choose your favorite Italian cheese variety out of Gorgonzola and Provolone, which would you choose? I know they're very different, but I'd have to go with Gorgonzola. I really like Provolone on sandwiches, but it tends to become bland for me quickly, so I choose Gorgonzola! Which would you pick if given the option to choose?

Me personally I really really like my provolone cheese! It is my most favourite cheese on sandwich's and I love to just grab a slice out of the cheese and eat it! I love the texture also. I haven't had too much gorgonzola cheese before, so that could be why. Although I did enjoy it, but I still vote provolone :)

Can't we all have both? :) I mean, it's a real crime to even think about choosing just one! haha!

Anyway, i think I might go with the gorgonzola.
Funny story... I used to be grossed out by it until just recently!
I was never used to eating "cheese with mold", as it translates in my native language :) I knew it was healthy, I could read about it a lot, but the though of eating mold - yuck!

So, a few years ago my dad first came to visit and stayed for quite a while with me here :) He did purchase gorgonzola and was thrilled to be eating real gorgonzola (not the "stuff" they import in my county, that's not gorgonzola, that's plastic! :D ). I did not approach it though, was very grossed out.

So, a few weeks back, I was at work and someone left some gorgonzola in the fridge. I was SO hungry! I had 2 choices: eat it or starve to death! So.. reluctantly.. I ate it. And I ate it all! It was so good! And it was the supermarket type, not even the good quality stuff :D :P

So, my advice for everyone is, when in Italy, try everything! Even if it looks funny, even if it stinks, take a deep breath and eat it! They have such good foods, it's a shame to pass up the occasion to try them out :)

I do love both of these cheeses. My personal favorite is provolone. It just goes great on steak sandwiches, meatball subs and even in lasagna. The cheese just has a nice smoky flavor.

I love American Provolone (which isn't really like Provolone in Italy), don't recall ever having gorgonzola though. Great on sandwiches and chicken. I don't seem to be able to get it here in New Zealand though, at least not for a reasonable price.

I prefer Provolone because it is lighter and goes with many things like sandwiches. It is subtle and not as strong and Gorgonzola, which I think is better used in dishes. I like my turkey or meat ball sandwich with Provolone as well. Have you notices how fresh the Provolone stays when melted. It doesn't get as liquefied as other cheese. It think many Italian cheeses have the same texture, like Parmesan.

Provolone in my opinion is the better of the two cheeses. My wife uses this in many of the dishes she cooks. I also incorporate it in many of my specialty dishes. This does go well on a meatball sub. It has such a great a flavor.
