Earthquake In Italy

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear this. If I remember correctly, there was an earthquake in the same Tuscany region not too long ago. I think it happened earlier this year.

Yep in January I think.
I was away from my home (Bologna) that day, my neighbour told me that she feel it..15 seconds eartquake

Yes, I know about the earthquake. I didn't know someone was injured though!

More and more earthquakes are 'happening' lately, it's scary. I fear every time I hear about them, I think about my loved ones and once, when I felt the whole apartment shake, I got so scared I even called them to see if they were OK!

Hearing about damaged buildings is sad enough, but when people are hurt, it's even worse!

Many people felt it here in my area but luckily was nothing like those that hit us last year. Perhaps as we are further away from the epicentre but it certainly brings back those negative memories of how much damage these natural events can cause.

Seems there was another medium sized one in the same area yesterday afternoon.

It measured 4.4 and has sent people back out into the streets again.

I really hope that things start to calm down soon.

It must be frightening! I read up on earthquakes and saw that Italy is close to the Adriatic tectonic plate (also known as Apulian plate). The fault zone runs through the Alps. Fortunate it is a small plate, so let us trust that it will stay that way.

In recent years, there have been some big quakes in Italy and they seem to be more frequent. Every day, there are small quakes but they are usually so small that you cant even feel them.

We added an earthquake watch page to our Portal last year as we thought it would be useful for anyone who wishes to keep an eye on things.

From my understanding it is Africa that is pushing against Europe and in recent years zones that where never declared as a risk zone are being hit by quakes. A good example of this is the Pianura Padana (Emilia)

I had no idea that the African continent is moving towards Europe like that.
Thanks for the link, Chillout, it's really useful!

I looked up explanations as well a this series of earthquakes is beginning top piss everyone off, so to speak. The only logical explanation I found was that these earthquakes can also be a consequence of all the drilling for natural gas and oil. I tend to ignore explanations such as "God is sending us a message" or "it's the aliens that cause them" :D

Well, I'm not 100% sure that the Africa pushing against Europe theory is the main reason.

I also believe that fracking may play part of it too but the government played down on that theory.

I tend to agree with Rosie. The human race is causing havoc in nature with all the drilling, building massive buildings and cities, and destroying the woods. I read in an article that the flooding in Germany is enhanced by the fact that the winding Rhine was made straight to enable large boats to pass through. There is no ‘natural winding walls’ left to slow down the flow of water.

I just saw on the news that China also experienced two earthquakes. Is the number of earthquakes on the increase, or are we simply more aware of what is happening globally because of the availability of technology and connectivity? I think our planet is under stress!

I think that technology helps us in terms of information and I do agree with all the drilling and other methods of extracting natural fuels does not help.

Of course, governments and oil or gas companies will deny there is any link as there is too much money to be made.
