Science doesn't cease to amaze us, but in this particular case what would be the point to reconstruct the DNA from a national war hero?

Forensic experts in Italy said on Thursday they had reconstructed the DNA of a national war hero and poet by analyzing semen he left on a handkerchief given to a lover 100 years ago.

If my lover gave me a handkerchief with THAT on, I'd not be impressed. That's just weird. But ok, for the sake of science, I suppose it served its purpose. Just hope they don't plan on cloning the person.

LOL, pretty much as I thought, it's not a trendy gift at least these days, but for the sake of science it seems to be handy. Yep, I am not a fan of cloning either, even more from someone that didn't share the democratic ideals.

I've always wondered though, will the clone have the same ideals as the original...er, DNA donor? Will they both love pecan pie and support left wing organisations? Or will they be genetically the same person but two different people in all other areas of their life? I doubt they'll be the same if identical twins are anything to go by.

Well, first and foremost:
analyzing semen he left on a handkerchief given to a lover 100 years ago.
YUCK! Why was this kept as a souvenir for so long? It's very unhygienic :D

And second, such stories remind me of what an incredible world we live in.
Sure, there are many, many problems going on in this world, as we speak, but at the same time, humanity has done so much progress in these last decades! It's amazing!

On a related note, those of you from the UK probably already know about this story.
Jut recently, "the first baby has been born in Europe as the result of a new IVF procedure that checks embryos for devastating genetic disorders." (source)
The process that makes this possible is called karyomapping. Don't ask me any details... I have no idea what this means :D just that, by using this technique, a healthy baby was born, his name is Lucas :)

I know this has nothing to do with the news Gelsemium shared, but it still has to do with DNA modification and creating something amazing.

It does indeed help to create something amazing like you say but I think the problem is that it can also be one step away from being able to create a 'designer baby'.

If scientists can check and eliminate certain disorders, how long will it be before they can manipulate the embryos so a parent can ask for a specific hair or eye colour?
