One of the largest cemetaries in Naples has gravediggers that said they will strike for a month, so bodies will just accumulate in the morgues until February 2, 2016.

There are about 30 gravediggers who work at the 18th century old Poggioreale cemetary. Those workers decided to stop work until the day the new contract for the cemetary is awarded.

Apparently, around 30 bodies are ususally buried a day in Naples. Gravediggers in biggest cemetery in Naples announce they will go on strike for a month

Oh gosh - I guess we never think about how important the workers in these industries are - I can't imagine that the morgues will have space for the accumulation of 30 bodies a day, if that's the average!

Hopefully if they strike it will at least prompt the new contract to be decided quickly.

That is really, really weird. I had not heard of a gravediggers' strike before, and I really wish that does not happen again. Governments should have public alternatives for vital services like this to make sure that this does not happen.

I wish that they get to the new contract quickly.

I've also never heard of this kind of thing either, but I guess it shows that while everyone gets caught up with the romance and beauty of Italy and its cities, there's a lot of issues that are hidden below the surface.

That's the case with a lot of countries worldwide though, and you can't let those things put you off visiting, and while it's not exactly something you'd read in a travel brochure, as a tourist it's not something that you'd even think about anyway.
