Perhaps you have heard of or read about food tours and cooking vacations around the world. I don't know if I would ever take one short vacation in Italy just to learn to cook, because obviously I cannot afford an expensive vacation at the moment.

But I find the idea feasible and fresh! So I looked up information about such guided experiences in Italy, and I discovered several things on offer: cooking classes, food tours, and cooking vacations.

Turns out that there are many types of culinary tours covering regions in Italy, from the Amalfi coast and Campania to Calabria. And they don't all take a few weeks to complete. Some are packages that are only a one-day cooking experience. Even market tours.

Would you take a cooking vacation? What do you think about having a culinary guided tour in your favorite Italian region?

I've never heard of cooking vacations, but they sound like tonnes of fun. Definitely something I'd be willing to try out. I love to cook, and I think having a culinary guided tour sounds like a really interesting concept. I will think about this next time I visit Italy!

I've never taken a trip specifically for the purpose of cooking. In saying that though, I almost always seek out a cooking class when I go on vacations, because I feel like it's a unique way of getting more in touch with a culture (and you get to learn a new recipe or two, and eat some amazing food - never a bad thing in my opinion!)

I've done cooking classes in Italy, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam so far, and I can assure you that if I go back to Italy again I'll be booking in another class. It's also fun to meet others at the class who have similar interests - I've made some friends that way!

Wow! You have a lot of experience with cooking classes. It sounds really fun. I didn't know cooking classes were so popular in so many different countries.

Yeah, my husband thinks I'm crazy because I've dragged him on them too...he didn't seem that excited for the first one - but once he got to experience how fun they are (and getting to eat all the goodies at the end!) he was converted. I just always search the city name + cooking class and usually Google comes up with some good results. Trip Advisor is often helpful too if you're looking for classes!

This seems to becoming more and more popular because a couple of times now, even though I've taken one myself, when I've checked in at an hotel, a cooking class as been on one of the 'things to do while your here' leaflets they give you.

I'd imagine that a lot would depend on where your staying aswell of course, I can't see any hotels around here in Manchester would offer that, I think we all know how to cook pie and chips already!

I just want to go on holiday right now just to try out a cooking class. Next time I go anywhere that's not in the UK, I'm definitely going to find a cooking class. :)

The one day cooking experiences and market tours are just what I'm looking for. I think a cooking vacation would be a lot of fun as long as I got to experience the region as well. I can imagine a culinary guided tour on the Amalfi coast would be amazing. Being introduced to the best and most gourmet restaurants alongside the most authentic in that area fascinates me because I know that the Amalfi coast can be very high end, so it would be fun to get a guided introduction to it all.

While reading through the replies on this thread as got me a little more interested in the concept, I'm still not sure if I'd want to take the cooking classes for the regions I'd be staying.

When it comes to holidays I'm more of a relaxing and doing whatever you want, when you want type of person so I think I'd want time off from the cooking.

I look taking cooking classes. I would LOVE to take a food vacation in Italy. When I think of Italy, I think of it as the birthplace of some of our best dishes. Out of all the countries I think Italy would be the best place to take a food tour.

Totally agree with you Kimmy - I feel the same way about Italian food, I think a lot of the best dishes originate from there. I guess I could be biased since my background is half Italian, but my tastebuds would say "no - you're not biased at all!"
