I came across this article about organic pasta sauce today. Apparently, they set themselves apart by using masterpieces of Italian art on their jar of sauce.

The picture of Judith has been a surprising choice to people who know the actual painting, rather than just the cut out from the pasta jar. Since she's killing someone and all.

Oh, good find! My daughter is an art history major. Alas, how house has always been filled with books, pictures, discussion, etc. I agree, the image of Judith is a bit gruesome of a choice. However, the background of of Judith is not what it seems. Granted, beheading someone is not socially acceptable. Nonetheless, back in those times, the reason Judith beheaded General Holofernes was a noble cause to save her people.

By the way, I do like the marketing campaign of highlighting Italian masterpieces! I suppose, next time, they will chose their subject to not be so controversy. On the other hand, it did put the company in the spotlight!

Yes, I do think it gives a classy look (the art!) to an otherwise common product (pasta sauce). It's nice to know the story of Judith -- somehow, I thought it was an episode of mythology. I guess the point would be more that, even if there was a reason for it, gruesome murder does not quite fit the scene of family-friendly pasta -- or even just friendly pasta!
