Do you pay property taxes on your home in Italy? When you buy a house in Italy what will the property tax be? Does it get calculated on the total square footage of the home or is there a flat rate that you pay depending on where you live?

Your property taxes are calculated on the rateable value of the property, your rubbish taxes on the square met rage

I think you can get this information of you ask the comune of the city where you want to buy your house. I only know of one tax that has to be paid, the IMU, and there have been so many problems last year because of this tax. It's the only one I know of, because it's famous.. but I think you should ask in the Comune and get detailed information about what you need.

As I said, IMU and imposts are calculated by the owner, not the comune and are calculated using the rateable value of the house which you can find written in the act of sale. The calculations are labyrinthine but are possible using the internet. TARSU/TARI etc are taxes adn therefore the comune will send a bill and these are on square metrage. Eventually as there is now a reform of the catasto, the old vani catastali' will be replaced by square metrage for everything which will make life easier.
