Other than Rome, obviously! My boyfriend and I love watching history documentaries and Ancient Rome is one of our favourite periods to learn about. We've been to Rome and seen the Forum and all the other great things there, as well as Pompeii, yet we'd love to see more actual remains of (e.g.) villas, baths and that kind of thing. Can anyone recommend anywhere that's a little more 'off the beaten track' yet still worth a visit for its historical/archaeological value? Or are most of the best preserved things within major cities?

With the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, two cities were destroyed by the volcanic lava. Most people know about Pompeii, but on the other side of the mountain was another city named Herculaneum (or Ercolano - Italian spelling). This city was also entirely covered by hot lava, and everyone in the city died instantly.

Are you familiar with Peter and Apostle Paul story? When they were in Rome, They were persecuted at Mamertine Prison Peter and Paul imprisoned there, but there is no stated reason of Paul's imprisonment. However, Peter imprisoned there before being crucified. Mamertine Prison is located at Comitium an open-air public meeting space of ancient Rome one of the best place to visit.

I had never heard of Mamertine Prison and the connection with Peter and Paul. So, your recommendation intrigued to look further into this suggestion, Today, a Catholic Church, San Giuseppe dei Falegnami, sits atop of this ancient prison. Thanks to excavations, an entrance now allows visitors to get a glimpse. I posted a picture of the stairwell. I think this historical spot would make a great choice to visit.
