Calabria

The region of Calabria, the "toe" of the Italian Peninsula, is situated in South Italy. It lies between the region of Basilicata and two seas, the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Region Calabria is divided into 5 provinces: Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio di Calabria and Vibo Valentia. A warm climate, sandy beaches and rocky cliffs are what make Calabria a tourist destination all year round. There are many Italian places of interest to be visited here: Scilla, the site of the Greek mythological sea monster, Tropea, renowned for the sweet red onions, Capo Vaticano and others.

  1. Catanzaro

    The Province of Catanzaro is Calabria's capital province. It is a beautiful Italian area, overlooking the Ionian Sea. The climate here is typically Mediterranean, with windy springs and autumn, but that doesn't stop tourists from visiting it. Catanzaro is famous for both the Ionian coastline as well as for the mountainous areas. Among the main Italian touristic attractions, there's the Cathedral (The Duomo) of Catanzaro, housing the Madonna with Child, the Catanzaro bridge, one of the tallest one arched bridges in Europe, the Remains of the Norman Castle and much more.

  2. Cosenza

    The Province of Cosenza is part of the Calabria region, in Southern Italy, and it is one of the most populated provinces of the country. It is a hilly area, characterized by a variety of landscapes, each more beautiful than the other. The province is situated on a total of seven hills, making the landscape of the city breathtaking. Touristic attractions here in Cosenza include the old city, with it's historical centre, many museums and cultural institutions, many medieval churches including the Church of San Domenico and the Cathedral of the Cosenza city but also many cultural events and festivals.

  3. Crotone

    The Province of Crotone has a total of 27 comuni and it's one of the main tourist destinations in Italy because of it's location, very close to the Ionian Sea. But the sandy beaches are not the only tourist attractions around here. For instance, the Palumbo village is famous because of the breathtaking views of the Lake Ampollino, the Castle of Charles V is an important landmark of Crotone as well and, most importantly, the capital city of the Province is famous for it's history. According to the legend of Ovid, Hercules built this city in his friend's name, Crotone, to honour him after the hero himself has put an end to Crotone's life by mistake.

  4. Reggio di Calabria

    The Province of Reggio Calabria is part of the Calabria region and it has the city of Reggio as its capital. The location is very convenient for tourists, who can either choose to spend a few marvelous days relaxing on the sandy beaches of the Tyrrhenian coast or they an opt for a trip in the mountains. Of course, Reggio Calabria is characterized by other aspects as well, the Basilica of San Giovanni Teresì, the Gerace Cathedral, numerous medieval villas are a few of the province's important landmarks. The Riace Bronzes statues are to be found here as well.

  5. Vibo Valentia

    Vibo Valentia is a beautiful province situated in the Calabria region. It was formerly part of the Province of Catanzaro, but became known as the Province of Vibo Valentia in 1996. There a many things visitors can do in Vibo Valentia, from enjoying the sandy Italian beaches to exploring the mountains in the Gulf of Sant' Eufemia. The province is mainly characterized by the hilly landscape, but what is specific to this area are the numerous olive orchards as well as lemon, oranges and other exotic fruit groves. Medieval castles, Italian churches and the Walls of Hipponion are also some main sights tourists can't wait to visit.
